We were planning a quiet christmas, my wife & I, and our 3 small sons. Gradually, however, members of my wifes family seem to have been invited until we will have 6-8 guests for dinner as well as our selves. Not a big problem, but where will everyone sit ? we have spare chairs, but our dinning table is not big enough for that many people at once. My wifes brilliant solution, put the big mdf boards I use for wargaming on top of the dinning table ( they interlock tongue & groove) and cover with a table cloth. result , a table big enough for all the not distant enough relations. Genius. The chest our tree is standing on needed a festive cover, so I used the big sheet of green baize I wargame on. Huzzah !!

Great! Make sure you put down a layer of cardboard first so the MDF doesn't scratch the tabletop.

Make sure you recreate some great historical battle on the table during dinner. Here's an idea, aimed at summer dinner parties, but easily adaptable for the festive season.

Perhaps he would be best to recreate the Christmas Truce for the sake of family and peace of mind.

That is very clever of your wife, but be sure to take down everything as soon as you can, it sounds to me like an ingenious stratagem to keep you away from the gaming table!

But they all go home after dinner, and I have a few days off and some 15mm ancient spanish to paint. Ahhh

Careful. She may appropriate your items now that she has seen their true use!

That's brilliant, David!

And I must admit that I am with Who Asked this Joker – be sure to reclaim everything after the event ;-)

You can always get the Brigadier to regale you with how he led the Charge of the Light Brigade, using walnuts, spoons and a pineapple…

I like the idea of reinacting battles along with dinner. You can have skirmishes over the Roast Beast. Recon engagements for the Salte&Pepper. Or better yet a siege engine invading the Turkey.

Same here, we have 13 for Christmas so my war gaming table cover got a 2' centre section extender and some auxiliary legs to make it a full 10'. I need to plan a big game for the new year.
