After using all of the cheesy river and stream representations on my gaming tables (blue felt, blue construction paper, yarn, etc.), I finally found an inexpensive, easy to use set-up. I took the Fat Dragon Games product, mounted them on vinyl floor tiles for durability, and covered them with clear Contact Paper to protect the printed surfaces. I was able to print out 24 tiles, cut them out, mount them, clear coat them, and then finish them to 'game ready', all in one afternoon. Here is a link to my blog page discussing the project. Cheers!

I've tried this (although without the contact paper) with some printed roads, but the glue on the tiles seems to soak through the 110LB cardstock I used. I'm interested in seeing how yours hold up over the course of a year or so.

EDIT: On second thought, I'm not sure if I used cardstock or regular printer paper. I THINK it was cardstock.

Pretty clever Sgt Slag.

After looking through your blog, I have one question. Are you a sock puppet for the Vinyl floor industry? LOL

Seriously, some great ideas there.

BrianW:

I have only had card stock glued to floor tiles for around 10-11 months. So far, no issues noted, but I will keep my eyes open for such problems. I did use 110# card stock, not regular paper -- I had thought about using regular paper, though, so now I will only use the card stock. The clear Contact Paper is to preserve the water-based ink images. I have no idea whether that will play a role in the issue with the glue seeping through to the image. Time will tell. Thanks for sharing!

LOL!… You've found me out! Yes, I work for my local Menards DIY store, promoting their cheapest vinyl floor tiles -- but only when they are on sale, for around $0.39 USD per tile, in boxes! I am a fickled fan (Read: "Cheap SOB"!). Thanks for the laugh, and the complements. Cheers!

After thinking about it some more, I did use card stock, but I sprayed it with a sealant before I put it on the tiles so as to protect the printing. That could well be the source of the problem, even though I let it dry first.

Very easy idea! And Fat Dragon has their streams on sale right now. perfect for the wider rivers I will be needing.

Link is broken due to cleaning up on the web site. Here is the new link -- it is about 2/3 of the way down the page. Cheers!

I used siver foil, sand & PVA. Here's some pics of the ponds "required" for OGAM.

Nice work, Inner Sanctum. I caved in: I was planning to use clear Caulking to build modular sections, from scratch (picked up two tubes to caulk windows, had plenty left over), but I decided the PDF + floor tile approach would be faster, easier, and likely more modular for my needs. I have too many other projects on my crafting table, at present, alongside of my figure painting projects… I want to spend more crafting time on painting, rather than building rivers and streams, so something had to give.

Thanks for sharing your project's results. They look great. Cheers!
