Hi,

one of the things I enjoy most about the christmas holidays is selecting books for the quiet days. My list concentrates on medieval warfare, but also contains some science fiction novels:

Any other recommendations?

Cheers,

I'm reading the Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen series by Piper/Green and Carr right now.

Usually, I read Warhammer 40k Horus Heresy novels this time of year, have two in the batter's box as a matter of fact, but started on Kalvan and going ahead with it.

I'm reading Herodotus' The Histories (translation by Robin Waterfield). I also began re-reading Batman: The Long Halloween; each chapter takes place on a different holiday over the course of a year, and so that's how I'm reading it.

Mr. Hague's Sea Battles in Miniature struck a chord with me; I read it many years ago, and really must read it again some day.

Merry Christmas,

Ron

Horus Heresy Vulkan Lives.

That's one of them waiting for me to read it…don't tell me the ending! wink

I wish they'd start moving towards Earth though…it seems the series is taking a final, but slow, lurch in that direction, but nothing definitive, as of yet.

The first 3 books in the Horus Heresy series are great reading. I think I pay around $7 USD and download them to my phone.

I'm struggling through a translation of Makarov's book on naval tactics – very dry. The other stuff I ordered got lost on its way to me so I'm 'promised' a delivery on Xmas Eve.

Agreed. It's becoming 40K: Lost in Space.

Re – Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen. I re-read this a month or so ago – enjoyed it tremendously. I didnt realise it was part of a series. I shall have to find out what others there are and get them.

Thanks

For fantasy I would pick the Malazan book of the fallen series by Stephen Erikson, for Sci Fi I would recommend
Eisenhorn
Gaunts Ghost's series
Exodus: Empires at War series
Invasion series from Vaughn Heppner
Star Crusades series from Michael G Thomas
Outside Context Problem series from Christopher Nuttall
To Defend the Earth
Opposing Force by Anthony Decosmo

Redcurrant,

You can also get all but the first H. Beam "Lord Kalvan" for your Kindle or any Epub tablet (NOOK), at the same location, for much less.

I'm almost finished with Jonathan Sumption's third volume on the Hundred Years War, Divided Houses. It is a massive tome (about 900 pages all told) and has at times felt a little overwhelming in its mass of names and details, but I've still enjoyed it a great deal. It sounds as though War of the Roses may be your main interest, but if you like the earlier war and haven't already read them, I'd highly recommend Sumption's series.

A book on the WOR I purchased some time ago might interest you. It is called Blood Red Roses and is about the archaeological work done on the mass grave found at Towton in the 90s. I've only read a little of it, but it is fascinating. It is amazing how much can be learned about these men, the hurts they carried from earlier years, their general health and nutrition, and the ghastly wounds at the battle that placed them in that grave. If you haven't seen it, you might want to look into it. Grim but compelling reading.

Second for Sumption. I've had Divided Houses for a couple of years (a Christmas gift) and need to tackle it.

Right now I'm reading a couple of Jules Verne novels-Robur the Conqueror and the Master of the Worlds. Both are available free for Kindle, and free is good. They also take up no bookshelf space so I have room for Jonathan Sumption's books.
