Good day all

Basically as well as future war I am also very interested in the modern wars. I'm still a "what if" type of guy so I think the 'Cold war' era really fits well. The cold war has some great miniatures and vehicles from the likes of QRF, however I am thinking that I would like to focus on some different scenarios such as Northern NATO forces, Swedes, Finish, Winter Soviets etc.

I'm also rather fascinated by the ‘side shows' mostly around Afghanistan and the Africa Bush wars…insurgency /counter insurgency type of battles. These also have a vast array of unusual vehicles and a real mixture of force types and weapons.

To begin with I started on some very generic sculpts based around the 80's. They are a US Infantryman and a Soviet Infantryman. I am using these as reference and for scaling. They are akin in size to Rebel Minis modern Americans. They are also sculpted by Martin Baker.

Here is a South African Border War ‘Bush war' infantryman. Quite apt for SADF or Rhodesia given the nature of the their kit.

Basically I'm trying to work out what to concentrate on! First something I'm interested and secondly something that people want!
I'm also looking for people to help provide feedback on weapons, vehicles uniforms, scenarios so if you'd like to volunteer I can add you to the group and provide more information. I only ask that you provide feedback and keep all of the information amongst your selves until I release it.

This is just the beginning! :)

I hope….

With IABNM undergoing final tweaks and due out early 2014, with the first supplement covering the Central Front WIP, I'll bid for 1980s:
US
E. Germans
British with SA80

Northern Front will be next so:
Swedes (with an IKV91 to go with that S-Tank)
Danes
Norwegians (any chance of an NM116?)

Mako1120 Dec 2013 4:24 a.m. PST

Baltics and West Germany sound good to me.

I'm interested in the island hopping, and possible amphibious invasions of Denmark, Sweden, and West Germany, not to mention the overland attacks there as well, so the above sound great to me, especially if someone does the S-Tank, and the Danish M-47(?) variant, in 15mm/18mm scale, amongst others.

Epic-Germans would be extremely welcomed addition, with either MPi-KM or MPi-AK74 (latter if late 80s, first if early 80s or reservists) – along with "buffer zone" nations, swedes and finns.

Swedes offer far more opportunities for domestic/"oddball" vehicles which didnt see major service in anywhere butt swedish hands, and if early 1980s is still desired, stuff like KP-bil APC ("Terrängbil m/42 KP" – literaly Off-road Car model _1942_! Bil = Car) would be highly interesting. It was one of the very first fully-wheeled APCs in major service, and it saw service fex. in Congo Conflict of 1960s. It was being pulled from service in 1980s, though I read article few years back that stated, IIRC, it wasnt completely removed from inventory until early 2000s!
AFAIK, QRF is in some point putting out Strv103(B I assume), but swedes also had stuff like allready mentioned IkV91 (Infanterikanonvagn 91, Infantry Cannon Carrier(/Tank) – no idea about the number) tank destroyer, and PBV302 APC (Pansarbandvagn 302, armored tracked tank type 302), and numerous other less-common vehicles like Pvrbbv 551 ATGM-carrier and earlier IKV-types which Pvrbbv 551 replaced. And definetly troops driving around in Volvo Laplanders (Tgb 11 and 13)! :D

Finns have notably less domestic stuff for early 1980s (like in most stuff back then, we were around a decade "late" when compared to swedes – most of stuff didnt emerge until 1990s), the most known example, Patria Pasi or XA-180 was accepted into service in 1983, but wasnt available in "large" numbers until 1990s (IIRC, around 70 was produced in mid 80s IIRC), also domestic T-55 upgrade didnt come until early 1990s, etc.

Norwegians would be cool too, but they are not in my particular field of interest though I do find their military extremely fascinating.

For E-Germans, most notably lacks are in form of utility vehicles, fex. Tatra 813 (or T813 in DDR) would be quite a nice addition (suitable for most pact-nations), and some other more "medium" truck, non-soviet type from some pact country – and ofc, good quality BTR-40 APC would be welcomed. IIRC not in front line service any more in 1980s, but still in use with reserve formations as a APC.

M1Fanboy20 Dec 2013 6:48 a.m. PST

Well, Poles and Czechs would be nice as well, they had some neat stuff like OT-64s and the like, not to mention the interesting look their troops had.

Redroom20 Dec 2013 7:34 a.m. PST

I think some Africans with mixed dress: US uniform and soviet weapons would work well too.

Armies,
Do you have any time frame that your shooting for to begin selling miniatures? I know it's up in the air and their is a lot of work to be done but a couple of the guys in the group are very interested in your Idea of Cold War Baltic Front and it would be helpful for us to know when we can start on this project.
My vote would be Soviets first. Everyone fights those guys…..

Most definitely amphibious invasions of Denmark for me.

I am gathering forces slowly (i gad this project going in other scales – but there is nothing for Polish army in late cold war period in any scale other than 1:600)

Thanks everyone

the more ideas the better!

I'd be game for 1980s kit Swedish infantry. If you beat Geoff to them, that is. I know he's close to the S-tank, and has Centurions I can snag.

But I'd really be interested in some what-ifs.

British infantry with EM2 rifles, Object 279, MBT70, AH56 Cheyenne, etc.

werwulf20 Dec 2013 2:26 p.m. PST

Central front, US, British, Canadians and West Germans. Soviets and East Germans. Pretty sure that would be popular

Mako1120 Dec 2013 3:18 p.m. PST

Ah, should probably be M-41 for the Danes.

PSADennis20 Dec 2013 8:58 p.m. PST

Armies,
Email sent.

Cheers Everyone

Keep them coming! :)

QRF are creating the Swedish S Tank and APC, so Im staying clear of them, be assured though that Ill be looking at creating my sculpts to the same scale. I'm a hobbyist first of all and Id like my stuff to be interchangeable with QRF!

Dennis…replied thanks!

Awwuuuu Naval Marines are on the list :)

MaahisKuningas90 – really good stuff thanks. Drop me an email id like to discuss some more of this

armiesarmy at gmail dot com :)

Gennorm…good call on IABNM! They will be an excellent set of rules amongst others

Cheers

Well I would like to see the "Bush War" line fleshed out. You should start with western kit and uniformed equipped troops (i.e. FN-FAL). There are plenty of choices for AK (i.e. Warsaw Pact equipped) armed insurgents but make them also.

I would really like to see the SIMBA's from the movie the Wild Geese. The western uniformed FNFAL armed African regulars.

Classic British Army of the Rhine, SLRs, Sterling SMGs, GPMG, Carl Gustav 84mm all with 44 pattern helmets and 58 webbing

hellfish30 Dec 2013 8:10 p.m. PST

1960s Cubans (Soviet-style uniforms and helmets with a mix of US, Belgian, Czech and Soviet weapons – could work for many Latin American rebel groups as well)

Early 60s US Army and Marines with M14 rifles

Early 60s Soviets with SKS and RPDs
