So having scored a battlefront Volksgrenadier box…I just had to make me a test piece for the other half of my winter forces for Fall of the Reich. I sorted the box and found this guy almost perfectly cast saying "give in…paint me!"

I hope the basing is an improvement over the American. I know it doesn't really look eh "volksgrenadiery" more like a winter Panzergrenadier but he could easily be a veteran from the original unit with some better clothes. The rest have mostly great coats and the like.

Looks great!

I gotta say, the basing makes me think early winter (Oct-Nov) or early spring (March), not deep winter (Dec-Jan-Feb).

15mm?

Yes, the figure is 15mm.

How would I do deep winter bases?

Maybe it needs more contrast – the grass and earth look too alive – like a sudden freeze and snowfall before they had died. But that said I like it and in dull gaming light it should look fine.

I basically went back, painting the grass and ground off white, and added more snow. Quick fix.

If someone out there makes frozen grass, I'd love to know.

I also think the ground color should be changed, people suggest off white with a wash, as the base color will reflect into the snow.

Fantastic job on that

As I recall, "Volksgrenadiers" are what regular infantry became by 1945, so a standard appearance would I assume be fine.

Why has this been crossposted to the Flames of War section?

Gottmituns20516 Dec 2013 9:49 a.m. PST

be…..cause it's a battlefront figure?

indeed… very nice….

I just started on this project, it'll be a dual army. American rifles vs Volksgrenadiers, the armor will be generic, panzer IV's in red oxide camo vs shermans. A few light weapons here or there, and some off table artillery. I think it's gonna make for a nice traveling demo game.
