Complete Noob question here so I apologise. What was the average altitude for engagements for the early/mid war Europe in the air.

Thanks

I can only really offer a speculation. Early War would be at lower altitudes as missions were likely to be more in support of ground operations during the period up to the Fall of France. So probably less than 15,000 feet. The Battle of Britain engagements would likely be higher up to 20,000 feet. The German medium bombers probably did their bomb runs between 10,000 and 15,000 feet but could go much lower on a surprise airfield raid.
With improved bombing aids and radar the combat tended to go to higher altitudes. So the 8th Air Force was bombing between 20-25,000 feet typically.

These are "guestimates only".
