Does the TMP site have any rivals that are close in size?

Tin hat05 Dec 2013 11:15 a.m. PST

I think there's an awful lot of dead accounts on here so it might not be as big as you think.

I've been locked out of three accounts for instance and have had to register again each time so I have four although obviously I don't use three of them.

if current events are anything to go by the gap will very soon be closing….

Mr Elmo05 Dec 2013 11:39 a.m. PST

Tabletop Gaming News has the news items but not the Social Content. Various game company forums have the Social Content but not industry news.

TMP manages to balance the two I think.

PraetorianHistorian05 Dec 2013 11:50 a.m. PST

I think everything else out there is more specific to a type of game or a specific product. If there was a competitor this place might be empty by now.

Well, Tin hat, if you've been locked out and are admitting to avoiding that punishment, no, I expect you won't be hanging around much longer.

I've been to other forums, but they just don't tend to have the scope or interest level for me that TMP offers. I do like Starship Combat News, but that's very specific in nature and thus naturally has a smaller pool of participants. (Though if you're interest is Spaceship Gaming, it's definitely worth getting the coordinates from the navicomputer! grin star-ranger.com/Home.htm )

gameorpaint05 Dec 2013 12:02 p.m. PST

In terms of scope, no one else really covers it that I know of. The sites with more people tend to focus on a smaller range of topics.

dakkadakka.com
Dakka is still focused on GW, but the news section is full of posts about other game systems.

Thanks for the benefit of the doubt eh?

May I add they were due to computer issues. Two were viruses which messed up my settings and one was a crash that meant TMP would no longer recognise the old name.

NOT any wrong doing on my part.

I looked around a lot and there is nothing out there quite like TMP. It has every aspect of the hobby which no other portal does. Actually it makes me smile as its just as the industry should be, open, fairly friendly, wide, not one genre or company specific.

I would be very sad to see it change radically in intent or to stop.

Very much agreed with this.

ConSimWorld…hands down (though, admittedly, board wargaming).

Still though…lots of members and hardly any of the angst that has erupted here over the past few months.

Who asked this joker05 Dec 2013 1:53 p.m. PST

So far there is still no portal out there that does what TMP does. WD3 is a forum for folks to chat on. The news element just isn't there. I much prefer TMP.

richarDISNEY05 Dec 2013 2:10 p.m. PST

Board Game Geek also has some minis games on it.

Bell of Lost Souls for the GW crowds.

Forum of Doom is pretty good too.

I had to 'shop around' to find other sites a while back.

I get "locked out" every month or so & found it easy just to begin a new account.

So my "footprint" at TMP is about 30 memberships.

Prince Rupert of the Rhine05 Dec 2013 2:45 p.m. PST

I've joined a few others (lead adventure, Dakka Dakka, Gentlemans wargames parlour) but I always end up back here Some of the other sites seemed very cliquey or just weren't to my taste. People always seem willing to bash TMP but this place is my interweb wargames hangout of choice.

ArmymenRGreat05 Dec 2013 2:59 p.m. PST

No competitors because no one else has Tango ;-)

McWong7305 Dec 2013 4:39 p.m. PST

TMP is number one by a long shot as a news source, the community has it's ups and downs.

I find TGN to be good, but TMP hits that sweet spot for minis, especially historicals and niches like 15mm SF.

There are other excellent communities though, don't get me wrong.

Glengarry505 Dec 2013 7:03 p.m. PST

I've re-joined 5 times (thus Glengarry5) due to technical lock-outs. I'm not good with computers…

Sparker05 Dec 2013 7:06 p.m. PST

Nothing comes close….

(In a good way!)

My apologies, then. My understanding was that a Locked Account was an executive action by The Editor based on member behavior. I had no idea that technical issues could result in the same. So again, I apologize for making an incorrect assumption.

Spoken like a gentleman Parzival. We need more of them around here these days grin

Doug em4miniatures06 Dec 2013 3:48 a.m. PST

A good thing about TMP is that when big disagreements blow up, there are people who "speak like a gentleman" on both sides.

Both sides will also turn up their fair share of the opposite but that's the internet for you.

Doug

Texas Jack06 Dec 2013 4:58 a.m. PST

Amen to that, Doug!

Tin hat06 Dec 2013 9:34 a.m. PST

Thanks Parzival, Very gracious. I apologize if I didn't make my initial post clear.

Skipper06 Dec 2013 6:12 p.m. PST

I've used TGN, Dakka Dakka, and a few others, but only rarely anymore unless it is specific to an interest of mine. But I Love the balance and diversity here on TMP and check in almost every day at least once if not more.
