Some new recruits from the old school

Here's hoping that Relic decide to produce some new ones soon!

Simon I like your work . Nicely done with the old minis.

I think the older ranges have a charm about them.

Simon's Blog…"Mike Evans of Relic has hinted that he may soon produce some (he already has armoured versions) so I wait in hope!"

Is that right, eh?

I'm not done yet and I don't mind further input on these. JJ has already mentioned about changing to belts…

PS I just bought a 40 pack of 100mm Pikes, can anyone tell me why the tips are ground sharp but not flattened?

Mithridates03 Dec 2013 5:11 p.m. PST

Mike

There are 2 types of these pikes – one lot is flattened, they should have different code numbers. I am using the ones with a point for Renaissance pikes.

Nice job on the Thureophoroi. Maybe I need some more to go with the LBMS transfers………..

Simon, I like your thureophoroi – I have the odd RAFM figure. Great faces but many have such spindly legs/arms! Their Persian heavy cavalryman is one that works well. Thinking about the Persian mounted commander. Not sure how he will scale up to say Foundry, Warlord and others.

In terms of the WRG figure, Essex have done a reasonable job, albeit with slightly short legs. Mike's above are not that bad either…….

At least WRG rules classed these guys as 'superior', shame Hail Caesar does not allow them to have a long spear, as it stands they are classed the same as earlier peltasts which does not seem right.

Gary,
I agree RAFM have great heads and I have used them with great success on a rather wide variety of other manufacturers miniatures. The Ral Partha figures do tend to be rather spindly but they can mix in well with some – particularly Immortal miniatures now owned by Warlord. I am currently doing up some earlier Greek peltasts where I use both together and I will post pics when done.

Mike,
great looking figures. Not sure what the problem is with the belts. They seem fine to me.
Unlikely that cloaks would be worn in battle however. It does make for a much prettier figure but it would mean these could not easily be mixed with your armoured Thorakites which are without.
The man on the right looks like he has a moustache. Unless they are Galatians they should all be clean shaven for this period.

Very nice, Simon (and Mike).

They look like belts to me now.. normally in the stellae the blousing covers the belts, but I like having something to paint.

As I stated on FB these look great, but no facial hair-- that's more of a Greek than a Hellenistic fashion in this period (a rarer for Greeks than early on). Galatians tended to be in their own groups… not that a Galatian couldn't ever find his way into a mercenary unit--- but it would be uncommon, so mustaches are not needed-- (it's easy to add one's own mustache if he has to .. than scrape this one off).

I would prefer a Thracian helmet like the one on the far right to the single Ptolemaic Sidon helmet-- but in the same vein, I think folks might also like a whole unit with the Sidon style helmets so they can concentrate on a Ptolemaic unit, or mix and match if they prefer.

These will also work well as Seleucid elephant guards or euzonoi of various types in later armies with peltai.

The larger photo has more detail, so make sure you right click and look at it in its own window!

I'll get rid of that one mustache and change the standards helmet…anything else?

How about giving the officer linen armour?

Mike, I will be waiting for these also!!!!!!!!!!!! Mike Adams

Simon,

It would be easy to just make the command armoured, that way they can be used for other units, but I really want these to be more closely matched like the rest. Maybe some extra Hellenistic command sets down the road???

Thanks,

Mike

PS. Thanks Mike

LEGION 195005 Dec 2013 8:04 a.m. PST

Mike, IMHO I think a armoured command would be great for these. Just a thought!!!!!!!!!! Mike Adams

Thanks Mike, anybody else?

Mithridates05 Dec 2013 9:27 p.m. PST

Mike – nice to have generic command figures that can be used for light troops. Some armour on the officer and/or standard bearer would be handy.
