Tales of Blades and Heroes or
Song of Blades and Heroes + Song of Gold and Darkness ? Both seem geared toward the same thing
with one more RPG and the other more skirmish wargame? What are the pro's and cons of each, which is better for solo, co-op, dungeon crawling
I've read some reviews of both but couldn't find any side by side comparrisons. Any more insights are welcome, just trying to decide which one to get first, if I like it , knowing myself, I'll probably end up buying them all :-)) |

Song of Blades and Heroes is a very effective minimalist skirmish game for some 10 figures. Easy to learn, good for solo, and the Gold & Darkness can make for fun dungeon romps. Co-op works fine as well. But it's very simple and fast. When you're hit you are either knocked back, down or dead. Tales is a simple old schoolish RPG, with character advancement and stuff. Sadly I have barely looked through it, so I'm not the best person to tell you about it. (Sorry, Andrea

As stated, Tales is a pen-and-paper RPG. Song is a tabletop skirmish game. What are you looking for? I personally play Song because I'm interested in creating skirmish battles – I'm not an RPG player. That said, you can easily play two or three linked skirmishes in an evening and create a narrative out of it. I actually do quite a lot of world-building before I game and create stories about why the characters are fighting. To put it another way: Song is solely focused on fighting, whereas Tales incorporates all the non-combat stuff that comes along with RPGs. It depends on what you are looking for. |

Song is great mini game. Tales is an extension of song, but doesn't work too well as an RPG. I ran it for about three months before giving up. If you just want RPG elements to your mini game, I suggest sticking with The song system. |

I've played alot of Song games, but I'm planning on a dungeon crawl using Tales to hopefully give more scope to handle situations and crucially expand the magic. Dungeon crawls, in my mind, are already a good half-way between the worlds of table-top and RPG. Not sure how satisfying the pure RPG experience would be

Ping Pong, I'm curious: what exactly made you give up on TBH? Not trying to defend my brainchild, just looking for opinions. Maybe it is something that can be amended in a supplement or a revision of the rules? |
