Hi all! Yesterday I had an absolutely brilliant game of Pulp Alley with my friends George and Nick at the G3 club (hence the title! ;) ). We wanted to do something a little different as it was a memorial games day for a well respected club member who passed away last year, so in this one we recreated one of my favourite stop-motion films from my childhood, The Valley of Gwangi. I mean…who doesn't like cowboys and dinosaurs, right? And, once again, Pulp Alley shows it's versatility! As usual, the full report is over on my blog – link

Good AAR. The dinos took out more men in your game than they did in the film – nice work!

One of my fave monster flicks, plus my go-to rules set! This blog I gotta read now!

Mike Mayes01 Dec 2013 1:38 p.m. PST

That was a really neat game. What stats and attributes did you use for the dinosaurs?

BlackSmoke01 Dec 2013 1:46 p.m. PST

The T-Rex was the Great Gonga terror from the Perilous Island supplement and the Triceratops was a Level 3 Prey from the Predators and Prey section at the back of that book. The raptors were level 2 predators. I thoroughly recommend anyone to give this a try! Great fun! And the dinos took out about as many as the cowboys shot down, although it was really down to the T-Rex going Jurassic Park on everyone!

I love your "Dino Wrangling and Lasso Rules"! LOL

That looks like so much fun, guess we'll have to go buy some yarn!!!!

Hi,
I played Rooster Hogburn and his crew and I had a blast. When Rooster and his men caught the veloceraptor I thought I had the game wrapped up but poor old Dean and Rooster ended up as tasty snacks!
The game was one of the best games I've ever played and a great way to spend a Saturday.
Black Smoke is a genius when it comes to game design and always gives us challenging and entertaining gaming scenarios. Pulp Alley has given him the best possible tools to do this.
It's also been great for me to finally get to use a lot of my figure collection. I bought the dinosaurs 13 years ago and Saturday was the first time they've been used. Since we are doing Perilous Island, I have a feeling they'll be out of their box a lot more in the near future. Frankly, I can't wait.
All the best,
George.

What size table were you playing on?

Also what speed did you give the ridden horses? Was it the same 6"/12" or something else?

Looks like fun indeed.

WOW! Awesome AAR!

I think we'll call those the "Official Dino Wrangling and Lasso Rules". :)

I like how you tied the lasso range to the character Finesse die-type.

Funny thing is, that's exactly how a character's close-range was originally determined for shooting in Pulp Alley. So if the character rolled d8's then their close range was up to 8".

Did you have cowboys trying to hogtie other cowboys?

THANKS for sharing!

The movement for mounted characters was suggested by Dave on the Lead Adventure forum. He gave the guideline for a 16" run distance, so we made it 8"/16". This let us use a 4x4 board rather than the usual 3x3. We also used his suggested rule that mounted characters count as being in cover, but a roll of 1 on the re-roll means the mount is shot from under him. This actually happened twice. I felt it was a really neat and simple rule and worked really well.

Oh, I like those "riding rules"! Thank you for the reply, sir.

The rule for a mount counting as cover but being shot on a re-roll of a 1 was a very good rule and added a lot to the game. Rooster Hogburn got shot just as he tried to escape the jaws of the T-Rex. He failed a heath check and did the re-roll only to get a 1. As his horse went down and he was left under the jaws of the beast it quickly gobbled him up!
Great fun and the sort of thing you can't help laughing at.
All the best,
George.

We've been having lots of fun playtesting the new rules for mounts. I also like all the different types of mounts we can ride.

Will the full rules be available in the Vehicles supplement? Really looking forward to seeing that!

Pulp Girl04 Dec 2013 5:56 p.m. PST

@GoodWood – That's the plan. Right now I don't see why it wouldn't make it in.
