So here is a follow up on the DIY game mat I'm making for commands and colors games. I'm adapting the Napoleonics game to the SYW. First here is a shot of the mat with some new terrain added:

Here is a shot of the main line with a flank on the river and the hills in the center.

The front line. Troops are Baccus SYW French. The units are 6 bases each 20x20mm mounted on magnetic 60x30 movement trays. I'll use one or two movement trays for each unit depending on how big the scenario is.

A close up of some of the troops:

Here is a close up of a village. If occupied the base is removed and several loose buildings placed around the troops to show they are in the village (I plan to make some dedicated town bases with removable centers, using 2mm buildings). I do the same with woods: I have a bunch of small "woods" markers. Just pick up the forest tile and put markers around the unit base:

I still need to add static grass and flock, etc. to the hills. I may even add some roaming sheep or goats just to liven them up. And I need to get better at cutting edges so they are more sloped/rolling hills and less escarpment.

The rivers are custom 1" rivers from Battlefield Terrain Concepts.

Looks great Mark. Wot, no hexes for C&C? Do tell. I'm looking forward to some 18th century scenarios for C&C.

I think the hexes are marked with black dots, just visible in the photos.

Had to see in the pics but I mark the center of each hex with a dot instead of doing the outlines:

Working on a few SYW scenarios right now…also looking at tweaks to the rules and some cards…

Great looking mat, but unfortunately I would go spot crazy doing that. Does anyone know where I can buy a correct size hex mat for C&C?

Also anyone know of a fan made Colonial expansion? I would love to use my 25mm Colonials and Zulus in this game.

I don't know about C&C's standards but we use a six foot by four foot Hotz Mats (a TMP advertiser) with three-inch hexes for Volley & Bayonet games. You can buy varied sizes of hex. We've also got 1" and 2" hex ones.

@Dutchy:

Really, once I had the triangle template made it took only 20 minutes to lay down the hex field. If the green on green is too hard to see you could always use yellow.

That said, the Hotz mats are very nice. I have one that is hexed with fields I use for WW1 dogfights and Aeronef games.

Richard Borg is currently fine tuning his SYW version of C&C. He has reportedly struck a deal with a game company to publish it, but I think that it is still 2 to 3 years away from publishing.

I do have a Hotz mat, sea blue with waves. A great mat with 5'' hexes on one side and 3'' on the other. Problem with Hotz is he doesn't answer emails, he doesn't give you a clue as to delivery and really he communications skills are dreadful.

This only from my experience, others may have better customer service, but I am loathe to order another from him.

I was also unable to source one from Hotz Mats.

In the end, I made my own with an alternate template technique. I printed large 5-in hexes on paper and tiled them together. When I had about 3-by-6 hexes, I overlaid a clear plastic sheet from a cheap picture frame and drilled each corner of the hex out.

I then had a big template to dot each corner with a brown Sharpie. I used the plastic sheet with corners drilled out. It was more trouble than I wished to put into the project, but less than dealing with Eric Hotz.

Order a Hotz mat WAY before you actually need to use it for a game. I have eventually gotten all of my orders from him and he does make a nice product. Some patience is required after the order is placed though.

On the subject of hotz mats, I have one. Is there a blend of flock that will "go" with the mat best? Seems my standard hills are not quite a match. Since I have to make new hills to math the 5" hexes, thought I'd see what others have done. Like most here, we'll be using the mat for a C&CN game.
