Help! My kids (12&10) are starting show interest in SF. I'm thinking of introducing them to Traveller. Since they both like painting, I'd like to find some figures for them to work on. I have the following requirements:

1) Roughly compatible with old Martian Metals figures as I still have a bunch of those and I want to use the floor plan sets I have from Azanti High Lightning and FASA

2) good mix of adventurer types with practically dressed females (My 12 year old daughter is very practically minded.)

3) Available in the States

Anybody have any recommendations?

Not sure how the old MM look but I stock QRF ( a small range of "not Aliens" and Rebel Minis (lots of sci fi and apocalyptic stuff).

There is more good 15mm than you can shake a stick at these days….

Yeah, have a look at GZG, Rebel Minis, Khurasan and QRF.

I agree with the above suggestions: Rebel Minis and Khurasan are both based in the U.S. and have great figures. Splintered Light Miniatures also makes two packs of ship's crews that would make excellent 15mm player-characters, but it appears their website is down at the moment.

Don't forget rafm for great traveller minis… 15mm.co.uk is pretty close too:

Twoball Cane26 Nov 2013 4:41 p.m. PST

Critical mass games…the mercenary figs as well as brigade models…not usa though

infojunky26 Nov 2013 5:41 p.m. PST

RAFM which based in Canada has all of their old Traveller License figures.

And to be brutally honest Ground Zero Games will get you your figures faster than any of the other companies out there. Also note that GZG's, Rafm's and the old Martian Metals figures are generally pretty close in size and heft. Rebel and Khurasan tend to be on the lighter side but not obnoxiously so…

Oh, and GZG's has a number of vehicles that are good matches for the Classic Traveller vehicles. Air/Raft, ATV, Grav Tanks etc. etc.

infojunky26 Nov 2013 5:48 p.m. PST

Rich the other thing to remember is AHL and the Fasa plans are done on a 1/2 inch grid, was just rereading Loren Wiseman's article on jTas on Miniature use in Traveller, and they at GDW used plastic square bases…..

I've bought from all of the above manufacturers (gulp!) & have had great service from all of them. I'm in OZ, so UK & US orders are all international post, without any difficulty to date.

One other name to note is that Eurkea make 15mm Ventaurians, should you need that particular 'faction'. No civvies or the like though. link

Dropship Horizon is a good information clearing house for 15mm sci fi. dropshiphorizon.blogspot.com.au

Vehicles sometimes take me a while because I have to wait for restocks from the resin casters, but the packs of mine posted above? I always have good stock of those -- orders within the 48 contiguous will arrive two to three days after ordered. I'll bet the same is true of Rebel.

infojunky26 Nov 2013 7:16 p.m. PST

I didn't mean to imply that the other companies were slow, just that Jon at GZG's has regularly beat even the US based companies with order to Product on my doorstep times here in Middle California.

They are all fine to order from, just GZG's has a shipping Wormhole.

darthfozzywig26 Nov 2013 8:18 p.m. PST

Yeah, you can't go wrong there at all. So many good choices! Also, Critical Mass Games have some great-looking minis, although they appear a bit larger than the above lines (or at least that's my recollection – I don't have any CMG minis personally).

Lfseeney26 Nov 2013 9:00 p.m. PST

For basing I like bingo covers, very thin, comes in colors
Can get wit or without metal ring.
Very cheap.

Hope you have great fun.

Good Lord. There is lots of good companies.Just take a look an Khurasan Miniatures,GZG,Rebel Miniatures,CMG,Armies Army,Hell Divers range:)im planning to get some soon,Ion age,all 15mm.co.uk stuff then some from Dark Star games,or Odzial Osmy, Blue Moon miniatures….there is plenty toys in market just take your time in research.Find ones that u will like most and get them:)
Personally I propose get full armies straight away or you will find yourself bburied in pile of tiny miniatures..

Wellspring27 Nov 2013 7:44 a.m. PST

Everyone else has made the good recommendations, so I'll just say that Khurasan, Rebel Minis, CMG, and GZG are great. Ground Zero Games is British but Jon's customer service is first rate and his "wormhole" that lets his products cross the Atlantic before you're done shopping for them is legendary around here. Khurasan's Felids make good Aslans, while CMG's protolenes make good Vargr.

Khurasan's 15mm spaceship is expensive but well worth it. Also look at 1/100 spaceships and models for ideas. I'd strongly suggest buying a couple cheap Revell 1/100 models on ebay and kitbashing a spaceship from that. If it's their very own design it will be more special to them, especially if they are roleplaying and build/buy a ship in-game. Some dish detergent bottles also make good hulls at that scale.

Also, be advised that many metal miniatures contain lead. I've asked several companies about whether their pewter is foodsafe and nobody wants to say, which pretty much means there's lead. At their age, this shouldn't be a problem, but it's something to warn them about.

I'd suggest getting a little bit of everything rather than one line. Traveler is all about variety, and you have an embarrassment of riches in near-future sci fi.

Logain27 Nov 2013 10:46 a.m. PST

Gzg is great, but shipping is expensive. Rebel and khurasan are a little cheaper here on the states. All three are fast, good quality, good service, and a good match scale wise. I have all three, plus some of the old MM. But now I just get khurasan and rebel. Pico armour and splintered light also have small ranges with reasonably clothed females that would work for traveller. Lots of options out there and all of them good!

darthfozzywig27 Nov 2013 11:11 a.m. PST

Gzg is great, but shipping is expensive.

In my experience, that's generally a wash, though, since Jon takes off VAT for US customers.

BlackWidowPilot Fezian27 Nov 2013 11:24 a.m. PST

If you're in the 48 states, Khurasan, Old Glory, and Rebel will all make the proverbial Kessel Run in less than two parsecs without fail, and I'm no talkin' about bulk cruisers mind you, I'm talkin' about the big Corellian GZG ships now!evil grin

If your spratlings are just getting started in Traveller, they're in for a real wealth of 15mm sci fi figure and vehicle options galore. evil grin

GZG i usually get within a week in the states, same with khurasan, Splintered light and rebel usually make it in 2 days and Mirliton Minis usually within4 days from my expierences.

Twoball Cane27 Nov 2013 2:39 p.m. PST

I have ordered multiple times from most manufacturers in 15mmscifi scale….I have never had an issue. That goes for gzg, khurasan or rebel (big3) or micropanzer…topgun..ravenstar…or some of the smaller
companies. I love this scale…because of the variety…but in no small way because the companies owners seem like great guys, who love the hobby….

Ok now send me free stuff?!!! :)

I hope more and more people get out of 28mm and support the good guys

Lion in the Stars27 Nov 2013 4:18 p.m. PST

Don't forget Blue Moon and Highlander Studios for character minis.

agrippavips27 Nov 2013 8:53 p.m. PST

Splintered Light also have a not-Firefly space ship crew and they have a sale running now. Make sure your family watch Firefly series.

I have figures from all the above named manufacturers as well as a bunch of the old Martian Metals. You will find that the newer ranges do not usually match the tiny Martian Metals figures very well. Personally this has never been a problem for me since I have been using the wonderful, but bulky, RAFM figures along side the much slimmer MM figures all along (not saying how long!). I find keeping units organized by manufacturer minimizes the differences. There is such a wealth of SF figures, and vehicles out there now! I would tell you to find a range (or ranges) you like then dive in and enjoy.
