The Nova edition is the newest. However, the previous one (Admiralty) is still very popular. personally, I still play Starmada X although I own the Admiralty edition. |

I own both and like the Admiralty edition much better. |

Admiralty has more options for weapons creation. It does take same time to resolve weapons fire though. Up to three rolls for each shot. The weapons arc designations are letters A B C D.. etc and not like any other game. And the movement rules and orders take some time to grasp. Nova is more streamlined and easier to play but you do lose some detail. Weapons fire is one die roll. Firing arcs are similar to other space combat games. And movement is easy to understand plus you get a few different options. Whichever you go with start with the basic core rule book first. |

If you have ALOT of ships Starmada Fleet Ops is pretty cool. |

I'm partial to the Compendium version, although it's long out of print. You may still be able to find a copy though; I bought mine at my local game shop a year or two ago. Maybe MJ12's online store still has a copy. That said, Nova is the newest edition, so it's probably the easiest to get. I find it has a steeper learning curve, though. |

Admiralty edition also has better fighter design rules. |

I found Nova has a pretty shallow learning curve, personally. It's far more streamlined than Admirality Edition (AdEd). AdEd is the penultimate expression of what Starmada has been since day 1. Nova is a new look upon the game. I find it is better for convention games and pickup games. I don't do a lot of ship design so on that aspect I can't speak. |

Use admirality to start and if you want more options you can always puck up the rules annex later. |

I played starmada when it first came out and loved it. Admiralty i missed but it has always gotten good reviews. I picked up up the Nova edition awhile back and almost threw it in the trash. Some of the mechanics are better but its adiff game and the ship desighn rules, esp the mechanics and point costs for weapons and arcs, read like gibberish. |

Nova is definitely different from the Compendium, which has the weapon systems already written up. The starship creation system also seems more straightforward in the Compendium. I never saw the Admiralty Edition, so I can't comment on it. |
