Had much correspondence with Niels Rullkotter of Westfalia miniatures. He has sent me some amazing pictures, both of his work that has somehow never gone into production and of this Waterloo diorama. I gather the diorama is the work of Arndt Wolfram and Niels has produced/painted many of the figures, but I stand to be corrected.

This is just a small selection. I would love to show the dream stuff that has never yet been produced, but it may be commercially sensitive. Hope you enjoy these

(Grin). Trying to outdo Armand is not easy!

Marvelous! And to think I *thought* I had a lot of Napoleonic figures! :-)

Double Wow! I would really like to see more. The attention to detail is amazing!

3rd picture down – I look at the huge numbers involved and wonder if the, let's say, first three ranks come into contact/melee with the enemy, what do the (many) other following ranks do. I mean actually do?

Seriously, do they attempt to find the flanks or wait to fill any gaps in front of them?

How many of the total number of cavalry actually find targets in a battle?

Thanks.

Siborne's work is still the original and the best.

Wow – but what size are these figures?

Sparker16 Nov 2013 2:38 p.m. PST

Very good – almost on a par with the one at the Rifles Museum in Winchester!

Looks great! Truly impressive.

I think I spotted some 1/72 ESCl and Zvezda figures.

Those German guys who put these things on are just crazy amazing. This is the same 1/72 German culture that has given us Leipzig and others. Just mind blowing.

Widowson16 Nov 2013 10:36 p.m. PST

This space:
That also struck me. In most cases squadrons of cavalry would not follow so close behind one another. Generally speaking, "full distance" (a squadron's width in distance) between squadrons would allow rearward squadrons to wheel ninety degrees to either flank to counter enemies. Even at "half distance" there was more manouverability.

In this particular instance, I can't swear the dio isn't accurate. I just doubt it. On the other hand, who are WE to knitpick such a magnificent work of 1/72 dio art?

NappyBuff16 Nov 2013 11:49 p.m. PST

Absolutely fantastic. Would like to seem more pics of that setup.

Buelow, sorry I do not understand. I suspect you know more about the origin of these pictures than I do? Yes 1/72 scale…

Agree entirely about the close packing of the cavalry, but it does make for a spectacle. Also, I am constantly struck by how narrow is the gap between LHS and Hougoumont, even today. It was much narrower then, as H had far more woodland. There cannot have been much room with thousands of cavalry packed in…….

I have heard further from Niels as below. The sensational news must be the promise of a 28mm diorama…..how many figures did he say?

Thanks to my trainee surgeon from Leipzig I have this translation;

"the photos you are showing on TMP are a test arrangement for the planned diorama (1:72) The photos are from the year 2011 and still have a few errors in the arrangement of the troops and the order they should come in.
The completed diorama shows the centre of the battle for the Farm of La Haye Sainte with the main attack of the cavalry onto the carrees.
I will only have new photos once I have completed arranging the presentation in 2015.
In the meantime the farm has also the previously missing gardener's house and a much better courtyard.

Ciao Niels.

PS: a diorama in 28mm figurines is also in the planning. We will see about thirteen thousand figurines."

Now just in case we got anything wrong and if your German is better than mine, the original ran;

and I meant to say, more photos on a new message board. If I put it on here, I suspect no one will realise there is something new!

bgbboogie25 Nov 2013 4:55 a.m. PST

I love the massed cavalry…….!!!!!

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP25 Nov 2013 2:41 p.m. PST

I agree but Imagine thousands and thousands of them coming at you. The photo as they pass LHS…try to work out numbers shown. Each rank seems about 20, maybe 12 ranks in that cropped shot…….that is 240……..it is hard to imagine the scale of a massed cavalry assault in those days, but this is great work and does capture it

Is there a direct link please?

Holy cow!

Sebastian Palmer02 Jul 2014 1:55 p.m. PST

Wowzers! Fabulous… I must get to see this. I've seen both Siborne models, which are wonderful, esp the larger figure scale 'small model' in Leeds. Not seen the Winchester one yet. There's also a big 'un in Cologne, by a guy called Andre, with about 15,000 Prince August figures… ought to post a link, but I'm a newbie here and haven't figured it all out out yet.

Sebastian Palmer02 Jul 2014 2:52 p.m. PST

Looking for more pics of this I found this:

… which seems to involve the same guys, but looks like a slightly different model/set-up… or is it just different views of the same diorama?

Apologies, I did not notice this had come up again.

The pictures came from Niels Rullkotter (yes, the NR chap who does every vehicle for the Perrys and Westfalia). He did tell me the original source, a group of them have produced this.

The link for everything I have is;
