The 'Snake bomb' has been around since at least since the Peloponnesian War, where it was used as a form of terminal homing cluster munition in naval combat.

I was just reading in Keith William Nolan's "Into Laos" where an American unit overran a NVA bunker complex only to find the NVA had cages of bamboo vipers in the bunkers they opened on leaving the bunkers. Needless to say they decided to move on before setting up for the night.
