Some may remember the film Willow (1988, story by George Lucas, directed by Ron Howard).

Willow, while not devoid of charm, is a fairly standard iteration of fantasy tropes. The production design and costumes are distinctive, but don't really break the mold.

Moebius (Jean Henri Gaston Giraud, 1938-2012) was asked to prepare designs for the film, but in the end they were not used.

Moebius' designs are inventive, unexpected, even a bit bizarre. I suppose it's just as well they weren't used in the film, as they don't really suit its tone; however, the works have a life of their own and certainly deserve to be seen (a selection of them appear at the link below).

Moebius was a genius. I fell in love with his work in Heavy Metal.

Yes he is. It reminds me of the Jodorwsky Dune. Ah the possibilities!

Good to see those, I recall first seeing Moebius books in the comic shop in the 80s. He sure did produce a lot of work, I'm sure I've seen only a small fraction.

jpattern2 pretty much beat me to exactly what I wanted to say about Moebius's work. My father and I used to share copies of Heavy Metal and that's where I first came across his stuff.

"…nut in the end they were not used."

--I see why.

Nice art, however.

Willow is a fun movie.
