It strikes me that Italian Wargamers are notable in two respects:
1. They are better looking tan the rest of us (although we don't set the bar to high it must be said)
2. They are writing some very interesting set of rules: Breaking News and Impetus spring to mind.
The other day I stumbled apon a free hex-based set of Ancients rules called Anticamente tridentebologna.it/index_E.php

The game is hexed based, which is important for me because I am little over rulers at the moment. The game is also designed for a number of 10mm figures in a base, but I could see no reason why their concept of base didn't fit in with one 28mm figure on a base; so we gave a go.

Not always, Mac, not always…
Anyway, thank you! :^)

Thank you Mac. I never heard about this rules but they look interesting.

Really a professional-looking set of rules. At least the equivalent of anything I have seen from major companies. Even if you are not interested in the period, take a look and you'll be impressed at the quality.
Thanks much for the link- otherwise I might never had heard about it!

I am half Italian and am better looking than both groups! LOL

Seriously though, it is good to see more from Italy. Impetus isn't taking over by any means on this side of the Atlantic though. It is interesting but we have been spoiled by choices here.

We are also spoiled in that we understand our abbreviations better than Italian ones and prefer everything in English. Italians are used to translating as they have had to for years with WRG, etc. I spoke Italian before speaking English, so the barrier doesn't exist for me as much.

More choices are always better. Choices from more parts of the world make for different perspectives on gaming as well. It is good to break free from old notions on gaming too.

I happen to like the flexibility of rulers though. While micro-measurements are distasteful (we always state our intentions when moving to avoid this problem), I like not being forced into a fixed grid. Board games do a fine job of that on their own. Chess is essentially the same thing. Rules should be a guideline for play but innovation, surprise and the unexpected are part of war. Rigid barriers to these essential elements of war, lose the attempt at simulated war in my opinion.

Well, I have never met any Italian Wargamers, I must admit. But going by the pictures of their events, they really do seem to be handsome devils. Well, compared to the rest of us at any rate.

Thanks for sharing. At first glance, it looks very promising.

More seriously Anticamente is a very good set.
I also want to remind Ganesha Games rules and Operation Squad series proudly coming from my country :-)

At second glance, it looks even more promising.
