A small British/Canadian Corps of Observation commanded by LCol Morrison defeated three American brigades led by Brigadier-General Boyd, which ultimately thwarted Major-General Wilkinson's invasion of Montreal down the St Lawrence River.

For a great read and a superb War of 1812 battle history, see Donald Graves "Field of Glory: The Battle of Crysler's Farm, 1813.

For war gamers, this a great battle to war-game.

Concur. I can't wait to finish painting figures for this battle.

Wilkinson – what a fine figure of a man. He was on the Spanish payroll as a spy while head of the US Army, deeply involved in whatever Aaron Burr's scheme was and managed to get trounced at Chrysler's Farm by a much smaller force.

I think if you look up poltroon in the dictionary his portrait appears.

Teddy Roosevelt said "In all our history, there is no more despicable character."

I have run this battle using Carnage and Glory II . Good fun. The key is handicapping the US forces to give the outnumbered Brits a chance. I had the US brigade commanders (3) roll dice each turn the low number can not move that turn..also added a sloop in the river that may or may not be able to fire on the U S . They found 24 pound shells on the field which could only have come from the British ships harassing the Americans running the rapids below the battlefield.

Playing Crysler's Farm tonight using Field of Battle 2nd Edition. I thought the rules worked well for our Lundy's Lane game in September.

Q: How effective were the (off board) British gunboats really?

Wilkinson- the worst US commander ever:

"He never won a battle or lost a court-martial"
