Air Force Aircraft of the Korean War
By Walter J. Boyne

"These were the fighters, bombers, transports, and other airplanes that fought the "Forgotten War" 50 years ago.

The Korean War that was just starting to unfold 50 years ago became the scene for some notable airpower firsts--and lasts.

Korea was the first shooting war for the newly independent US Air Force. The war saw the first large-scale combat use of jet aircraft. Within months of the war's outbreak on June 25, 1950, Korea produced the first-ever jet-to-jet combat. The US military got its first taste of combat against Soviet aircraft, Soviet tactics, and, on some occasions, Soviet pilots."

The "Sabre" is such a beautiful aircraft.

Yeah, I love the lines of the early Sabres. I'm not so fond of the F86D, 'Dog Sabre'.

Kaoschallenged09 Nov 2013 7:13 p.m. PST

Surely my favorite fighter from the war. Robert

Second though is the F-82. Robert

The "Dog" is most definitely a dog.

I'm very much for the very early phases F-82's, P-80's, La-11's, P-51's, F4U vs Soviet Bostons. B-17 & DC-46 SAC. Fasanating.

Mig's, Meteor's, Planks and Sabres, Panthers and Spads, all good.

Totally agree deflatermouse. Robert

Does anyone have any info, books, link to the 351st Fighter Aviation Regiment (night). Mainly the La-11's.

Very cool thread!

Always thought the F-82 was one of the wierdest aircraft in service.

F-86 is one of my favourite fighters of all time and especially the Canadair CL13B Mark 6 Sabre variant – the best dogfighter right up to the introduction of the F-16A!

I do like the look of the F-86D/K/L Sabre Dog – it has an F-4 Phantom type meaness about it:

I like the earlier models of the F-86. The D model just doesn't have the blunt nose that to me best represents the Korean War model. Robert

I'm an early sabre fan. I especially like the markings of John Glen's sabre: MiG Mad Marine.

Tomorrow I am planning on running my first game with the Cape Fear Historical Miniature Society as part of the Wilmington Public Library's observance of International Game Day. It happens to be a game of MiG Hunters with Sabres going after MiG-15s. So this thread is timely for me.

Aircraft markings were far more interesting in those days than the current drab low viz schemes.

Yup. Alot more lax for sure grin. Not like WWII but some really good ones. Alot of B-29 nose art.Robert

Does anyone know if any of the other UN member air forces had any? Robert

Looks like the Bug hit me. Robert

I have found these two photos,

"Pilot Officer Randall (Randy) Green, a former member of No. 23 (City of Brisbane) Squadron RAAF prepares for a mission against targets in North Korea with No 77 Squadron RAAF. The nose art on his aircraft reads the Korean Kid. This Meteor, A77-316, was normally flown by Sergeant (Sgt) James C Kichenside, who served in Kimpo, Korea, from March until September 1952, completing 148 operational missions. Sgt Kichenside was the youngest pilot in the squadron and was known as 'the Korean Kid'"
