Having 98% of my 15mm Napoleonic project completed and pretty much have what I need for my 28mm EIR project except for some Germans, I want to plan for the project after the EIR. I am very OC, by the way. So I want to do Macedonians and Persians in 15mm. But open to other armies. Since my 28mm EIR is figure removal, I'd like my 15mm Ancient project to be unit based. Looking for advice on rules and compatible figure lines. I'll be at Fall In next week so I'm looking on seeing what I can pick up to kickstart this project or at least seed the madness. Thanks for the advice in advance. |

Larry I did two projects that I've really liked. One was using Warmodelling 15mm. They have nice sculpts and historical opponents. I've finished a Mid-Republican Roman, a Cathaginian, and a Pyhrus Macedonian army all about 1800pts FoG. Turned out really nice. Between the 3 you have a lot of variety in how each fight and a good rock , paper, scissors match up of tactics and strengths and weakness. It's a project I'm really glad I did. I also did a Spartan and a Athenian army with Xyston figs. Very very nice figs. I've not seen their Persian figs in person. Of course Imperial Roman vs Celts vs Persians is solid too. |

With FoG basing you should have a lot if rule options. Hoplomachia by The Perfect Captain is really good for Pelop War |

I do have FoG but not used it yet. Would need to get the Immortal Fire book. Good suggestions guys thanks! Warmodelling I had not considered. Might have to take a look. |

For single stand elements with no figure removal, I recommend Impetvs. |

Impetus is agood game, and you can try a simplyfied version for free. Do a search for "basic impetus". I also like Hail caesar. Both these games are unit based, without casualties removal. |

I enjoy using my 15mm Macedonians and Persians with C&CA. DBA-sized units fit nicely on the commercial game board. Many of the very best C&CA battles are from the 2nd Expansion highlighting the Macedonians and Persians. link |

@Larry R: It's hard to give any recommendations without knowing what you like in a game? How complex? How much time do you have to play? What size armies are you looking for? John |

Try Basic Impetus, its a free download. |

@Joker. Yes probably not enough info. I like playable games to a realistic outcome. Flexible on army size. Never enough time to war-game. Not sure that helps a lot. Pretty open since I'm in the planning phase. |

DBA is a simple game that gives a good outcome. 3.0 is almost there and a playtest copy can be had from the Yahoo group. They say it is just about what the game will be when it is finally released. Basic Impetus is a good game and can be played quickly. My own Ancients D6 is another. A bit ore fiddly than some but reasonably easy to play. johnswargames.wordpress.com/ancients-d6 Bigger battles? Hail Caesar maybe. It is the popular set right now. Full Impetus is another with a good following. I like Might of Arms. Fairly inexpensive ($18 with shipping I think). Similar to WRG but without the headaches. Ancient and Medieval Wargaming is a fun and simple set. Can only be had as an e-book at this time. Good yahoo group for support. That should get you going. *grin8 |

You can pretty much use most all nonskirmish rules with WRG type basing and as you probably know trying different rules can be fun. I'd again give a thumbs up to Warmodelling. I'd never seen them and took a leap of faith. Really nice and clean and very comprehensive for the periods they cover. |

Another vote for Impetus. Great game and never a dull moment. As an aside, Impetus and Armati 2 share the same basing (if one uses the intermediate Armati basing which most people seem to do) so going back and forth isn't a problem. |
TheRatGod | 10 Nov 2013 9:05 p.m. PST |
is impetus basing close to the dba basing? 40x15, 40x20,40x30, 40 and all that? |
kreoseus2 | 11 Nov 2013 3:33 a.m. PST |
Impetus uses 4 DBA bases for most units, 2 bases for foot skirmiser units and a single base for artillery, elephants and chariot units. I still base for DBX/Fog and play Basic Impetus witht hem, so I always have multiple options for the same figures. Phil |
cytaylor | 11 Nov 2013 5:07 a.m. PST |
Macedonians vs Persians is actually a competitive game using FOG |
Dave Crowell | 23 Nov 2013 2:18 p.m. PST |
Try Basic Impetus. It is a decent game, is free and uses bases that even multiples of DBA etc basing. Warmaster Ancients is fun, but out of print. Also War and Conquest, which is my vote for replacement for Warhammer Ancient Battles. It does track casualties by single figure, although multi based figures are not a huge problem when playing. |

Armati 2, all the life! simple rules yet complex to master, realistic C2 (no units running around the table like motorized infantry companies), right "feel" compared to an ancient general, few choices to make but crucial, 1 game in 1 evening, unit based, complete army lists
PS I forgot: all games are balanced, "ad triarios redisse" (unless you make very bad choice in deployment
