Are the secondary objectives a secret until the end of the game?

Some of them require the enemy to interact in some way, such as placing a prisoner to be rescued, which would be difficult if they didn't know what the objective was. So generally they should be known. I have played scenario games at cons that have used secret objective, but they were picked in part because they could work secretly.

I ran an M&T participation game at several UK shows last year

I had 7 sub-plots – 5 could be kept secret until achieved or the end of the game. The other 2 were the civilian and the prisoner which had to be revealed to me.

My favourite sub-plot is "I'm too old for this" where the officer's stats are reduced to the lowest levels and he has to survive the game

We play it that the side plots are revealed – not realistic perhaps but practical (no umpire required) and fun – as the players try and avoid them

If you have an umpire you can keep the side plots secret (in fact, you can keep the main plots secret, too), but otherwise you need to reveal them.
It seems odd, but it works pretty well; they certainly add a lot to the game. Last time we had a deranged English officer who might be controlled by either side.
