Star Trek original fans, are the DVDs/Blu-rays any good? Seems like many negative reviews on amazon; but not sure which version of the DVD the reviews are in reference to. Are there different releases available? One of the problems at amazon, not sure exactly which reviews are for which products. Some of the negative comments are episodes are not in order, disc freezing or skipping, updated/edited CGI graphics (God knows why they would ever do this; kind of like Lucas ruining the original Star Wars). Thanks for any comments. |

I have the blu-ray sets and think they are great. The clarity is wonderful, 7.1 surround sound, option to watch them with original effects or enhanced effects. I prefer original but watch the occasional enhanced and think they captured the spirit of the thing well. I am really glad I got them. |

I watch the show on Netflix, which has the new effects. Unlike what Lucas did the changes to ST are spectacular without changing who shoots first. "The Doomsday Device" is an outstanding example of where it went well. |

I have the original series on DVD, the original release version (which came in the yellow, red and blue plastic cases— I love the look of these by the way). I think they're excellent. The image quality is superb, and I personally prefer the original cheesy 60's effects to the modern CGI remastered ones. The episodes are in order of original airing, with The Man Trap and Charlie X therefore occurring before the Kirk pilot Where No Man Has Gone Before (which has slightly different uniforms, very different phasers and communicators, a few different bridge elements and a completely different doctor). But it's not that hard to go with filming order, if you want— just watch WNMHGB first. The set includes both The Cage two-parter and the original pilot (with Captain Pike) The Menagerie, so you can watch the tale either as the poignant quasi-flashback version which aired, or as just the bizarre encounter in Rodenberry's original production. I have no experience with the Blu-ray version, so can't comment. But if you can find the classic DVD set, I highly recommend it. |

NetFlix has them on disk and streaming if you have that service. It'd be pretty easy to check them out there. The series was apparently remastered into HD in 2006, and they decided for whatever reason to add CGI at that point: link |

I have the most recent complete Series 1-3 on DVD with the remastered effects. I was doubtful about tampering with the effects – and I was wrong, they look superb. |

I have the same set Parzival has, and love it. Doug |

Also recently got the re-mastered originals from Amazon (I'd been waiting for the price drop, Paramount keeps them high for a couple of years after initial release; finally came down to my price point). Double ditto on loving the new effects, does fit in quite nicely. Plus, my mind is still blown watching them in colour ^,^ |

The original series was shot on film, which means the live action stuff was perfect for HD. The effects, however, were done with the understanding that they were for broadcast television resolution at the time. They wouldn't really have held up when transferred to HD. The remastered versions with the HD effects are seamless and look terrific. They didn't try to "fix" the shots so much as simply recreate high resolution versions of them. |

They did "fix" a few shots though. Most famous one is that "jink" the Enterprise does in the opening credits. It was originally there due to some problem with the studio space when originally filiming. For most of the shots though they did try to keep things the same but with higher detail. Even to the point of keeping the phaser shots in early episodes looking like the later photon torpedo shots. |
