Known previously as grantfromcanadaeh, Barry Goldberg, The Goldbergs Tuesdays, Grant Dyck, the stifles made me quit, and Moishe Shalom. I didn't change his name to Account Cancelled (he did). If I remember correctly, he asked me to Lock his account because he was leaving TMP. I don't remember if he gave a reason. |

And here is at least part of why he left (from his blog): "How to finish a wargames project link I read this blog post today and it really resonated. Having just dumped all my painted French Naps, and what amounted to a lifetime of unpainted, plus my ECW, and other assorted odds and ends, I am ready to surrender: I am a miniatures addict. I bounce from one project to another, without any real hope of finishing anything. Just when I'm close, I forget what excited me about the project and look for something else that's more exciting. Trebian makes some excellent points about not going to shows and not looking at magazines in his article. I will add another: stay away from the internet! Being in Canada, we don't have shows. Salute doesn't happen here. GW used to do a Games Day before the Dark Times set in and they left Canada completely. I did go to one once. But I digress. Without shows, I do like magazines to read. Frankly, they are very out of date by the time they get published. I am an internet user, and often know about most of the exciting new stuff long before it comes out. I think we all know that addictive personalities have multiple addictions, right? Well, along with being a miniatures addict, I am a miniatures forum addict. I can talk for thousands of posts about nothing, with people who I've never met and likely never will. Kind of sad, isn't it? I recently resigned from being a moderator on the Warlord Games forum, and I felt a little better. In four short years, I managed to rack up over 8500 posts. About what? Almost nothing. Now I need to kick my TMP and Lead Adventure forum habit

Sorry to everyone for being the cause of this guy dropping off the grid. Actually he fully got the "Finishing projects" blog. The main thought behind the whole piece is about identifying behaviours that get in the way of what you want to achieve. As a fairly low level forum user I never realised how much of peoples' time it took up. |

Great post Trebian. Seriously, not being sarky. So many gamers just keep adding to their "lead pile", myself included. It's good to see some tips to make your time more effective, and at the end of the day, finishing a project is what it's all about – to play with. I'm trying to be very strict about new purchases and new projects and clear some of that backlog. Personally I'm back here more as I've given up that other time-eater – Facebook. At least the time spent here is hobby related. And I can stop any time I want

Mishima, Good to hear you enjoyed the post. I've been blogging for nearly five years now and that post is now comfortably my most popular, exceeding even my definitive blog about Edward Woodward and Battleground which I wrote four years ago. Not bad for a 1,500 word post with NO pictures at all in it. As you say, finishing the project is the key thing. Whenever you are doing anything just think "Is this helping me to finish my army?" If the answer is "No" stop doing it and go back to what you should be doing (okay, so I exaggerate a bit. You have to eat. And work. Probably). If your justification for the displacement activity is "but I enjoy it" ask yourself if you enjoy it more than actually finishing a project. If you do then stop moaning you never finish anything as you clearly aren't serious about it. Tough aren't I? Trebian |
