How would you envision it?

I would like to see:
15mm or 10mm N Scale Clone Wars. Republic versus Separatists.

Republic has the clones, wookies, jedi and allies. CIS would have all their droids, the tank droids, spider droids etc. Could also have merc units for both sides to hire. Later add a space map expansion with all the ships, so you can do campaigns both in space and on planets.

CIS vs Republic would allow players to make their own paint schemes, make up their own scenarios etc. Each infantry base would have a few guys on it and would represent a squad. Such a small scale would allow the Republic's gunship/transport things and other air units to be used in scale.

Could have different "Army Lists" for different planets or battles or races. And plenty of scenarios to game. From all the big battles on the different planets to smaller stuff like Order 66 with Jedi vs Republic.

Would also come with terrain. Few foresty items for Naboo/Kashyyyk, desert for Geonosis/Tatooine, urban for Coruscant or whatever else planet. There is a Star Wars wargame already but I never played it nor have I seen any of the models. That game is more suited to skirmishes. Anyone else ever wanted a Clone Wars war game? :D

From what I recall of most of the movies, any Napoleonics, or Civil War rules would work.

I don't remember a lot of tactical nuances in them. More like just straightforward, frontal attacks, for the most part, with large groups of troops.

Personally if there was going to be a new SW wargame, I would want to see a comprehensive ship-to-ship combat game, not on the scale of X-wing minis game, but throwing Star Destroyers vs Mon Cal MC-80s, etc. I have a bunch of 1/10,000 kits from Oddysey Slipways for just this purpose. Star DEstroyers are still fairly large, but just about everything else is a decent scale for gaming (recall there is a huge size difference between a Star Destroyer and a Corellian Corvette!). One of these days…

Clone Wars was major horse and musket tactics. They even maneuvered in line. Quite dumb, really.

The Clone Wars TV show did a bit better on tactics. There is one episode where they plan a strike on a factory or something. Of course they fly down ravines into anti air fire instead of air dropping to the entrance but better then lines of droids marching towards you.

That said… I NEVER want to see an official large battle rule set for star wars. I'd much rather see a skirmish level game based during the rebellion. The rebels did a lot of raiding and special ops stuff. The clone wars stuff is just too corny. Rebellion era doesn't have large scale battles. Hoth is about as big as you get and that was just a holding action to get the VIPs off the planet.

The rebels never really took a planet by force. Other then Coruscant but that was a special ops action for the most part with a giant super star destroy tearing up several blocks of the city.

I would like to see FFG produce another rule set for large scale ship to ship combat. You know an original design that works for large scale ships not a know off with flying saucer bridge ships.

If the Powers That Be did decide to go that route, I think I would call the SW Capital ship wargame idea cursed at that point.

Just give me 15mm toys to play with, and I'd be alright :)

All in a starter box? Sounds like either not enough of either to be worth it or a very expensive starter box.

The kind of tactics that too often emerge when the leaders just plain don't give a Bleeped text about their troops. Both sides are using manufactured troops: droids on one side, clones on the other. Disposable.

You can look at the Clone Wars as a solo war game where only the Jedi aren't under control of the player: Palpatine.

Right, the Clone Wars weren't even a war per se as much as a gigantic engineered smokescreen/coup leading to the destruction of the Old Republic. OTOH, both sides didn't know it.

Clone Wars was major horse and musket tactics. They even maneuvered in line. Quite dumb, really.

This was the case in the original Starship Troopers, too – let's all stand in a battleline! I think some directors (and wargamers) just like the look of static massed troops.

I would go for a fleet-scale type game, but on land it does seem SW is better suited to skirmishes, with all the larger than life characters. Ideally, a ruleset would allow for games in any era: per-Republic, Clone Wars, 'interwar', Rebellion, New Republic, and of course the new episodes. It would allow you to point-build/stat your own aliens/vehicles. But it's hard to see that ever happening.

As pointed out, with so many house/adapted rules, all we really need are those minis!

Actually, I am fairly happy with the Star Wars Miniatures Battles game from WotC.

WEG s 'StarWars miniatures battles' was pretty good, IIRC. Hard to find, though…(?)
Ditto the above comments on the silliness of 'clone wars' stuff… just when you thought the StarWars universe couldn't get any more absurd… Funny thing is, these guys STILL can't hit each other, even lined up and firing at twenty paces.

I do not play alot of Space games, but I have heard this one is excellent: Colonial Battlefleets

I play Naval thunder from the same designer and it is excellent.

Supposedly with Colonial Battlefleets you can use any Genre:Star Wars, Star Trek, BSG etc and even mix them.

Am I the only one who thinks a variant of Infinity by Corvus Belli would make for a great Star Wars miniatures game? Unfortunate that it would never happen.

Ah true, scratch the terrain. And the tactics are pretty bad. The wookies have trenches but hop out of them and run towards the enemies in one battle.

15mm Scale, like FoW. I never played FoW but it looks cool. A few of the smaller vehicles per box. 3 Tank Droids per box set, 2-3 Homing Spider Droids per set, infantry platoon sets with lots of battle droids and clones. Smaller, cheaper specialist sets for Spider Droids, droidekas, other races like Geonosians (that would be flying ^^), Wookies. One Republic or droid gunship per box, larger vehicles/droids all one per box.

I'd have articles for the different battles. ex: Add some greenstuff to the clone troopers to give them coats for the Battle of Mygeeto. I would of course charge astronomical prices for everything :). And the game could have a skirmish rules like Warhammer skirmish of the old. The GW website had all sorts of cool articles and scenarios for skirmishes.
