So I switched from GW sepia wash (which i love) and started using army painter soft tone but it's a little darker than I'd like. Does anyone have a way to lighten wash tones? Or recommend an alternative? |

Sorry, this is a GW-based solution: I mix the Lamia Medium with the shades 1:1 with a cheap eye dropper I got at the local drug store. If Army Painter is smart, they've got their own version of the Medium. |

If it's their wash (eye dropper bottle), you should be able to mix it down with a touch of water. If it's their dip (large can) then you'll need turpentine or mineral spirits. Another option for the wash version is a 1:1 mix of matte medium and water. I usually will add a drop or two of flow aid to the water before mixing with the matte medium. |

Secret Weapon makes the widest range of washes I've seen. I particularly like their concrete wash. Another option for the wash version is a 1:1 mix of matte medium and water. I usually will add a drop or two of flow aid to the water before mixing with the matte medium. This is the ultimate answer. Once you get a handle on understanding medium, pigments, and thinners, buying washes is just a short cut for ease and consistency. The secret to water based washes is that flow aid to avoid getting a "ring" from surface tension carrying pigment particles to the edge. |

GoP – thanks for the secret weapon idea, i had not heard of them before. it's not a problem of flow or pooling or ease of use, both GW and AP are fine for me – just that the AP soft tone is darker in color. |

To be clear, what I meant by ease/consistency of use was mixing your own washes from regular paints. The only thing you really need to get to quality of the off-the-shelf washes is that drop or two of flow aid when you're adding water to thin a regular paint. |
