Can anyone tell me of the flags carried by 14th; 24th; 47th and 52nd North Carolina units in the above brigade.

To the best of my research, at Gettysburg, none of Pettigrew's Brigade carried state colors. All carried the Battle flag as their single color.

It was a very rare exception that any CS regiment of the ANV carried a state color, or anything other than the Battle flag as it's color from Antietam to the end of the war.

That brigade had recently been transferred from NC, so it might not have yet received ANV-type flags.

I believe the flag of the 52nd North Carolina was captured at Gettysburg and is in the collection of the North Carolina History Museum, so you might try contacting them. There is also a flag on North Carolina flags in the Civil War.

Don, The 26th North Carolina's flag from Gettysburg is preserved, and it was a standard battle flag with a white border.

FWIW, here's an image of one of Pettigrew's coats. probably worn close to the time of his death, as it has the facings for a general officer.

And here is an image of the restored/preserved flag of the 52nd North Carolina.

Here is another question for the experts – would the brigade command carry state colours?
I would assume that they would, what else would they carry?

Off the top of my head, I can't remember seeing any reference to CS Brigade HQ flags in the ANV. The only HQ flag I know of from the ANV was Lee's HQ flag.

In the West, general LLoyd Tilghman had a HQ color that was a unique 15-star variant of the battle flag, but he was killed at Vicksburg and his command never reconstituted. That flag is about 36"/side.

As with everything ACW-related, if you look hard enough you can find an exception, but for CS Brigade (and other HQ) colors, it would seem to be a rare beast.

TKindred – thanks for the response.

I hoped that they might carry state or national flags to add a little bit of colour to my life!
