I have added part 8 to my series on the Danish Army of the Napoleonic wars to my blog. This covers the Artillery organization and uniforms. Earlier in the period, like the infantry, the artillery wore the hat. The change to the shako was made circa 1808, along with the rest of the army.

When I painted these figures (30+ years ago!) the only information I could find about the artillery equipment was from the Tojhusmuseet in Kobenhaven (Copenhagen). This indicated red carriages with the metal fittings painted yellow. Pretty outrageous, but I went with it… I am never one to pass up some unique color! I subsequently saw boring grey carriages listed (similar to the British artillery). It may have been that only the Fortress artillery was painted in these outrageous colors. However, a second source from Denmark *also* lists red carriages with yellow metal fittings, so who knows?

Peter,
Wow a colorful and great looking artillery units. Good to see you still gaming with units from 30 years ago.

You'll never have a problem locating them on a gaming table though.

Excellent stuff again Peter.

P.S. My artillery batteries have the red and pale yellow colors too!

Is it possible that "yellow metal fittings" could mean brass?

I ratherr doubt that, brass would dull very quicly. On surviving specimens throughout Denmark, it is definitely yellow paint.

Very Nice!

Well who knows, maybe the red and yellow really is correct for the carriages and the reported grey is in error. A good excuse to visit Denmark some day, I'd say! :-)
