I have started on a few Aventine figures, plenty of guess work and googling have gone into the colour scheme. For a starter I thought I would just stick to an off white plain colour for the cloth of the first units.
linkAre the colours on the acccoutrement and equipment about right? I dont really see the need to make the soldiers too alike or regularly supplied. salut |

Looks fine to me. There is some debate about whether tunics were predominantly off-white or red. Isidore of Seville records an old tradition that under the Republic the soldiers wore red tunics on the day of battle only. But there is no really definite evidence from this period, so either would do. The feathers on the helmet were "black and crimson", according to Polybios, but what that means – two black and one crimson? Either according to choice? Black with crimson tops? – is anyone's guess. |

Are there any large birds with a feather that is both black and crimson? My guess is no. I would go with a read and 2 black or 2 red and a black. Nice looking figures. |

Yes, he looks very nice. I did my Republicans in a mixture of white-ish, red and very grubby off white tunics depending on how well equipped they were but maintained a degree of uniformity within elements. They are Romans after all! |

colors are ok. Early Rep Romans supplied all their own gear, so tunics could all be different, also shield designs. Are you going to give it a brown wash? |

I like your painting style. I've recently started on the same type of project, and am going for a fairly irregular look, assuming that legionaries supplied there own tunics, and helmets. Tunics are predominantly red and white, but I've put in some blue, green and brown as as well. I've also varied the feather colours within units. The only coordinating aspect will be common unit shield colours.I was assuming the helmet feathers were dyed – one of the Opsprey books suggests they were swan feathers. |

Thanks for your supportive comments. Currently away from home and my paint desk, working OS hence the tardiness of my reply, but I'm looking forward to getting home and getting on with the project. No doubt I will be full of questions as I progress and I have taken onboard your suggestions. salut |
