I have started getting some units together for Hammer's Slammers. I can't decide on basing.. as in, no base or to mount them on low stands
Thoughts? Thanks! |

I'd love to see them on very, very low stands. Maybe like 1 or 2 mm off the table. I think the extra little shadow would give a nice effect. Of course, modern day hovercraft (GEV?) still have contact through the skirt to the ground:
So, if that's the case, I'd do no base

Use pennies or washers glued to the undersides to lift the skirt *just* above the play surface, for that shadow effect. Or, if you want something higher and more dramatic, borrow the technique used to make the Landspeeder "float" in Star Wars— mount mirrored tape all the way around the underside of the tank at a 45° angle. Viewed from the side, it will show a mirror image of the surface underneath. Don't know if this will work on the tabletop, but it's worth a test try. |

What he said. But I have been considering getting some translucent gray or brown rectangular or square bases from Litko that are smaller than the base of said floating vehicles for a similar effect. |

Wouldn't bother, unless you give a good 5mm clearance you can't tell the difference between base or no base. Have tried with my old crow blowers, went with a piece of 3mm thick perspex. Minimal effect. |

On 28mm vehicles I've put the occasional shim under (specifically) combat cars as they are able to ride a little higher, but not under all. Not much: just a 2mm piece of black plasticard. In 15mm I will confess I have not done so, nor in 6mm (though the latter are a pain to pick up!). Vehicles that ride higher – like some of the TAS and VTOLs – I have put on cut down clear flight stands.

For whatever it's worth, I use precut wooden bases from the local Michael's craft store with a pushpin glued to the middle. I flock the base, and add some reindeer lichen to conceal the pushpin: link
The advantage to basing is that in 15mm scale one can turn them into mini dioramas by adding casualty figures, battlefield debris, an overrun anti-tank gun position, terrified local fauna, etc.
Hope this helps! Leland R. Erickson Metal Express metal-express.net |

Id say no base and simply let the customer attach their own coins or washers

Also a bit of black plasticard under, like Treadaway. For vehicles riding higher I prefer a piece or two of stiff wire (painted dark). Much less eye catching than shiny plastic. |

All of my hover vehicles have ether a penny or 2mm MDF underneath to give the shadow effect :) link

Neat idea to use 2mm MDF bases to raise the blowers. Any requirement for these, should I add these sort of base to portfolio? Regards |

I like the MDF idea as well.. Gives some good stability as well. Thanks Matt! |

Dang Parzival! Now I have to buy some mirrored acrylic and try it! |

For my 6mm Slammers I just glued a little washer on the bottom of the hull

Dang Parzival! Now I have to buy some mirrored acrylic and try it! No kidding! I think I will try that with my grav vehicles, though. I might base a few hovercraft, but I want to give them dust/sand/spray around the skirt. |

Dang Parzival! Now I have to buy some mirrored acrylic and try it! *snicker* As the film is shot from ground level, and your figs are viewed from above, may find flat upright works better. Doug |

For GEV wouldn't bother. For grav would bother. |

To be clear, I've never tried the mirror idea; it just popped in my head as maybe being worth a shot

At Mad Mech Guy The ones I used were 2mm MDF bases for Ancients at different sizes all rectangle. I'm sure that people would want them with the same footprint (I would have been a lot easier) but I'm not sure how you would go about it as to the amounts people would want! Ie single tank or a company of three or four. At Rebel Minis Your welcome :) Cheers Matt |

Dear comstarhpg With having own counter top laser (well sitting on floor at present) I would easier be able to do various sizes of bases to sizes people would want. Any suggestions for needed sizes would be gratefully appreciated. I'm cheap too or at least think I am!!!. |

For Grav I use CorSec flight stands. For GEV, I don't bother with a base for them to give "lift" effects. The mirror idea is pretty cool though

Mike use the felt circles you buy to put under chairs and tables they have peel off paper with adhesive different sizes for height I use them and they look great. John |

At Mad Mech Guy When I did most of my Slammers force the first time around I used 20x40mm bases on combat cars and 40x80mm on blowers. But the new Ansty blowers I used 80x100mm. All 2mm thick. This varied on the other vehicles but I tried to give at least 5mm gap all round the vehicle. If I was buying bases I would probably like ones that are again the 5mm gap all round but shaped to fit the hull :) Hope that helps :) Cheers Matt |
