Here's a very good site for free 1:250,000 North Africa maps. Hint: start with the "index map" at the top of the list.

Here's a piece of one of them. There's a key, but I believe that the blue has to do with water / wells / dry lakes and the brown with hills / roads / etc.

Hinds, I have that, but has a terrible lack of detail. The Soviet map of the area is far, far better. The US map directly to the south is also much better and done in a completely different style. I believe that there's another edition of this sheet, but I can't find it online and haven't tracked it down in realspace.

I would like to find contemporary maps, since man-made features, in particular, change rapidly over the years.
