yes

As stated above,
PM, see outgoing.
Delete multiple PM's.

Change Photo's stories in Showcase and Workbench more often. I've seen some of them up there for a long time.

Maybe highlight a specific post regarding a great looking game, convention report or painted figures in the Profile area.

Bandolier15 Oct 2013 8:16 p.m. PST

Following a thread and the PM upgrades sounds good. I realise a lot of the work will be under the hood though.
Does this Old Stuff (pending reconstruction) get overhauled? An active rules directory will be great.

Old dogs don't want to learn new tricks. We see this all the time in my field when people are loyal to software designs that are demonstrably bad and actually painful for new people use. Basically it's just laziness and resistance to change, which isn't really a strong argument to keep things as they are. Sorry OFM >;)

There is currently a ranking system on how much you post, its called the "post to stifle ratio" ;-)

I think I'm pretty happy with TMP as it is but have trouble following interesting threads so am happy that will be fixed.

I'd also like to be able to block a poster from view completely rather than just blanking out their posts but not headings.

Martin Rapier15 Oct 2013 11:13 p.m. PST

Could we please have an option to order the front page posts by last updated time? No more active threads dropping off the front page and I need never look for a board again.

Could we also increase the maximum displayed to 500 from the current 200?

This thread is a demonstration of why TMP will die. Hands up people under 50? Don't want change don't want features, then same moaners ask to see outgoing PM's.

Jesus wept.

Kaoschallenged16 Oct 2013 1:50 a.m. PST

I hope it doesn't happen just like when the History Channel Forums switched to a new format. Every thread and post just disappeared forever.Over I think 9 years of my posting there was just wiped away.I've never been back since they switched. Robert

badwargamer16 Oct 2013 3:21 a.m. PST

Better search engine the main one for me. If I search for more than one word, or search in a thread rather than just titles, it always fails.

Being able to click on a link on the front page that shows a list of threads I am following is something I like on other forums. They usually have most recently updated at the top. I can do the same by searching for threads with me as an author on the current TMP but it is as bit of a longwinded way to do it. A simple click on a tab on the front page would be better inmho.

Thirdly, I quite like a 'pic of the week' on the front page. A bit of eye-candy.

streetline16 Oct 2013 3:48 a.m. PST

Search function for hobby news would be…. nice….

Keep Stifles, lose the stifle count, and hide topics started by people you've stifled. That way those of us who like Tango's posting are happy, and those of you who aren't happy won't be bothered.

Simples.

Patrick R16 Oct 2013 4:10 a.m. PST

Following threads would be a big bonus.

I personally would not like to see the introduction of a password that automatically changes every 30 days, and then insists upon a mixture of capitals, numbers, and a minimum number of letters, when you delete your cookies.

This is one of the few sites that make allowances for the old and forgetful…

A clever technologist once claimed, "It's really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them."

How about STRONG DISLIKE for the supposed "improvements"?

"There are two kinds of fools. One says this is good because it is old. The other says this is better because it is new."

CorpCommander16 Oct 2013 10:13 a.m. PST

No boards. Just one board where every post is tagged with subject matter tags. So a post about a Rabaul game would have WWII, Air as it's tags.

I should be able to click WWII and see all recent posts tagged with with without having to dip into and out of a dozen WWII boards.

If I want to be deeply specific then let me add additional tags.

All current messages could be ported over with a bit of setup work. Even crossposted messages could be consolidated.

Also, easier editing. Right now I am looking at a 4" by 2" box to edit this with no hints as to how to include images, links, bolding, underlines, etc. Yet at least 40% of the screen has nothing interesting showing that could be filled up with aids to help make this easier.

I think an addition that would be wonderful would be for a community edited list of blog and RSS links. I use an RSS aggregator (Discourse, Windows 8) for a lot of blogs and I totally love it. Its one of several ways I get information about hobbies. Let the community vote up the best ones or mark the ones that are not hobby related. It would be a great way to reinforce the community.

Finally, the Dawghouse is not enough. We need a Reign of Terror. Either with public executions of memberships or gladiatorial games for people who just don't get along with others. The loser's membership is forever discontinued. OK, just kidding on this suggestion! Just checking to see who kept reading!

doc mcb16 Oct 2013 11:35 a.m. PST

Yes to following a thread, no to individualized signatures. I enjoy Tango. The search engine really needs improvement.

Overall I'm pretty satisfied with things as they are, so easy does it on changes.

Why vote on this. Just make it a selectable option to be able to turn off topics from people stifled. It is no one else's concern which topics I want to see. As it is none of my concern what other people want to see.

This is a feature a number of people would fine handy. If there is a technical reason fine (which I doubt actually), but there is no reason to limit an optional feature based on the majority vote of a minority of members that actually vote.

First off, I agree with you. It'd be nice to have that option.

I think though, maybe the editor doesn't want to put the time into a designing a new feature that will only go used by a small percentage? I can see where "designing" by vote might make sense. Biggest bang for the buck and so forth.

Cincinnatus16 Oct 2013 2:45 p.m. PST

What don't I want to see? An application written from scratch.

TMP doesn't thrive because of its interface (probably in spite of it) and won't fail on a new one unless it's just so buggy and poorly implemented that it drives people away.

Find something that already works and customize it.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP16 Oct 2013 3:56 p.m. PST

I like the TMP Forum format as it currently is; easiest-to-read forum I participate in (I hate hate hate the "folder tree" look of some forums out there).

I also agree on:

• No "rankings" or "medals" or anything like that. Prolificacy is not the same thing as quality. I also don't much care whether someone else "likes" or "dislikes" anything posted, by me or anyone else.
• Maintain the small member icons.
• Improve the search function.

I would like to see:

Some way to flag or alert me if an older thread I am interested in has new comments, even if it's fallen off the front page. This should also give me the option to "unflag" a thread if I don't care to be alerted of changes.

It would be nice to be able to quickly toggle threads, topics, or even individuals' threads on and off. Not to single anyone out, but some are more prolific than others, and threads get easily lost in the "wall of threads" that currently makes up the front page. But if I could simply click something to blank out different categories or prolific postings to see what else is up, or conversely to select certain categories or prolific posters and blank out others (because there are often nuggets of interest to me in these), that would make the TMP experience quicker.

Another possibility might be to have the "wall of threads" organized by board. Currently it's completely chronological, so that an SF Discussion thread is on top of a WW2 Naval thread, over an 18th Century thread over Terrain, and so forth. If instead the front page could be split up into the viewer's preferred boards, with all SF board items grouped together, all Fantasy grouped together, etc., then users could find threads of interest much more quickly, especially when returning to look for a particular thread which might have moved lower down the page.

No archiving or clean up in the middle of the night. It is OK for those in the US -- but for those of us in Australia, it hits at prime time!

And those of us in the States who work graveyards!

Smokey Roan16 Oct 2013 4:48 p.m. PST

Keep it all the same, except:

How about a "Delete All" function for PMs?

How about everyone has to have the U as their avatar?

Mehoy Nehoy16 Oct 2013 4:54 p.m. PST

A second vote for fewer boards and tags instead. That would be so much better than crossposting all the time.

You don't want your grand children to see you on a website that does not have these attributes, they will think you are "SO LAME" or worse "OLD".

I don't care what my granddaughter thinks! She knows to keep her mouth shut, or the candy/goodies supply dries up!

Amen. Time for an act of benign dictatorship rather than a vote.

dayglowill17 Oct 2013 5:15 a.m. PST

On the whole I like TMP fine the way it is, so I'm pleased to see Bill "will attempt to keep TMP as much like the current version as possible".

As to the whole issue of turning off topics, how about a "mute flag" that flags both boards, and members, for "muting" (ie. not showing topics on the homepage). Then add the option of a global "mute button" on the homepage, giving us a simple way of seeing either everything, or just focusing in on our particular interests if we are in a hurry.

Of course I have no idea whether such a feature is realistically achievable :-)

As to turning off topics from people stifled, while this might prove useful, knowing that someone mostly starts topics that I don't need to see on my front page, is not the same as wanting to erase them completely from my TMP experience.

Maybe a video channel someday?

BigNickR17 Oct 2013 7:53 a.m. PST

I agree that avatars, footers (quotes and such), and "Ranks" serve no purpose and really don't need to be here…

PHPBB-style boards (which often have ALL of the above features) aren't the best for our user base and WOULD make TMP too much like every other site out there. But as coresec said there are improvements that could be made that would GREATLY improve the site. Plus the ability to customize font size and color layout on the users end (invisible to all but the computer using it) would also go a long way to improving site ergonomics

essayons717 Oct 2013 11:52 a.m. PST

I'd like to see a "like" or a "thumbs up" feature. Useful in those instances where I simply agree with a person or like what they say, but have nothing to add but a "pat on the back".

Bunkermeister17 Oct 2013 12:27 p.m. PST

Keep it pretty much the same.
The ability to follow threads would be helpful.
A better way to edit and post would be nice. Like windows icons on top of the edit box for posting photos, making bold text and such would be helpful.

I'm VERY happy with the way things are here on TMP. I like the layout, the ease of moving around the various boards, etc.

I've stayed here not just because of the quality of the posts but of the simple and useable layout. I don't mind seeing bells & whistles. I also post to Warseer, and I very much like THEIR layout as well.

But for my daily wargaming needs, TMP is perfect for me just as it stands. So I support John the OFM in his comments on this. I see no need to change.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP17 Oct 2013 7:51 p.m. PST

I third Thomas Whitten. Great idea. I also think Cincinnatus nailed it. Why reinvent the wheel? All the bug issues that have plagued TMP (including having to sign off each day) would be eliminated by doing as he stated. No medals, sigs or similar.

Thanks,

John

Thomas Whitten22 Oct 2013 11:36 a.m. PST

A great idea? Not so sure, it about doubled my stifle count. :) I do have to concede MrHarold's point about it not being worth the editors time. Nonetheless, it is a feature I would like.

Cincinnatus and John do make valid points about not reinventing the wheel. I agree. I also like the no medals, sigs, etc., and I agree with Parzival on the folder tree look.
