…in order to help fund the new Editors you hired in order to Improve TMP?

Well, I tell you what.

Dump the ridiculous "I somehow NEED to KNOW how many times I've been Stifled" information on our personal pages and I'll be happy to Update my account.

I'm not saying get rid of Stifles, if someone wants to stifle another person here, let them do it.

But we're all adults here and enough is enough with this schoolboy

"Nonny, Nonny Boo-Boo, I stifled YOU-hoo"

mentality that has really taken off over the last several months around here.

Fellow TMP'ers can Stifle me all day long, but I don't need to know about it.

Dump the "Stifle Industrial Complex", treat supporting members like VALUED CUSTOMERS and I will GLADLY add three months to my account next time I access my Paypal account!

Come on, Bill. Enough is enough…stop poisoning what is otherwise a terrific site with this juvenile past time of letting paying members (i.e., Supporters) know that Person X doesn't like them.

Do that and I will CHEERFULLY Upgrade my Support!

RavenscraftCybernetics15 Oct 2013 4:53 a.m. PST

OOOOOO make it so yhat supporting members cant be stiffled. that wull increase sales.

Ignore it. It means nothing just like any other anonymous criticism posted on the Internet.

I have to admit, I've never even looked at or noticed that stat. Who cares? I would prefer "dear editor: if you'd like me to upgrade, how about redesigning the site to bring it into the 21st century and not allowing people to place 20 posts at a time in the marketplace."

A TMP upgrade is the incentive on offer.

Yesthatphil15 Oct 2013 5:56 a.m. PST

TMPs upgraded membership is the only membership I have not renewed where the organisation didn't follow it up and remind me and/or ask why I didn't renew.

It gives the impression that it isn't bothered.

Then it gives away free memberships … then it asks for people to pay to upgrade because it needs more money … (extra editors, home improvements, whatever …)

Confusing? Hmmm

I'm not saying 'no' … I'm just seeing if I can figure out where its heart is and why it is so arbitrary at times …

Caesar15 Oct 2013 6:40 a.m. PST

If you don't look at the stat, then it can't bother you.

Silent Pool15 Oct 2013 7:38 a.m. PST

If you don't look at the stat, then it can't bother you

Caesar, you probably say that because you have a pithy small number of stifles. Those with more (considerably more) tend to be attracted to the Stifle Table, like moths to a light, to find out if they have been able to redeem themselves by not posting 'offensive' posts. Futile really because stifling has become a sick joke, a main TMP attraction, and IS NOT a reflection one's posting style. Self-loathing is unpleasant.

Anyway, keep your money and save your breath (!), The Editor is not for turning.

What do the new Editors think? Heaven forbid they break rank and tell us. If the Editors want our money then perhaps they should let us know where they stand on the issue.

chriskrum15 Oct 2013 7:55 a.m. PST

I don't care about stifles.

However, I am baffled by the sudden addition of three editors for a board that is ad supported and consists of almost entirely user generated content. If their job is primarily to monitor comments and send people to the Dawghouse then I really don't see what the use is).

Once upon a time there was a rather useful miniatures directory here with pictures and reviews. Then the site went subscription based and instead of those useful features being updated etc. what we got was the nuking of the CA board and the creation of the private Blue Fez.

richarDISNEY15 Oct 2013 7:55 a.m. PST

I personally would love non-gaming related articles (except for Utter Drivel) put on the Plus boards where they belong, and not in the normal section.

Plus, I'd love to see the Polls back. frown They were a silly distraction that I liked.

I'd sign up for more years if that those things would happen.

Polls were good for TMP – even though some people avoided/hated them.

They generated hits, and that means more advertising revenue.

I don't understand why they don't come back – maybe Sub-Editor 3 will be tasked with Polls ?

Personal logo Miniatureships Sponsoring Member of TMP15 Oct 2013 8:03 a.m. PST

technically, the issue in this thread is not about stifles but about issues related to Bill's request for people to switch from a free membership to a sponsoring membership.

Since they were asked to part with their money and become a supporting member, they have a right to state what will make them more willing to do.

TMP is like any other business, if it wants to grow and expand, especially as the future causes change, then it needs to beware of what will attack consumers to it's product.

15th Hussar15 Oct 2013 8:14 a.m. PST

Gentlefolk,

Just so everyone knows, I USED to be very upset with stifles, especially when I committed a "faux pas" myself which earned me a solid increase, but I noticed with the Tango01 Flame War a few months ago that stifles are flying around here and I'm laughing at all the ones I have wracked up since then.

Still though, IMHO, the fact remains that it is DEAR EDITOR who is obsessed with letting us know that a bunch of unknowns (to the stifled) have stifled us.

I collect them like Merit Badges and laugh at this point, BUT as a paying and supporting member…you want my money, stop telling me I need to know I was stifled.

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP15 Oct 2013 8:15 a.m. PST

I find the cost I pay for membership to be very reasonable and well worth the money. That said, I really don't know what these three assistants do or what they are going to do. Going from zero to three assistants in a short period of time is pretty significant but I admit I have no idea what it takes to run a site like this.

As the Ed. stated in the request for more $, the additional editors were to free him up to develop a better site. At least when you come on the TMP you are NOT bombarded with posts offering to increase certain of "personal assets", to date the "hot mama" who lives only x miles from you, or update your credit scores. So, it would appear the assistant eds are keeping the spam off TMP. For that I say Bravo!

ancientsgamer15 Oct 2013 10:46 a.m. PST

Well, other than being an idiot and getting into posting arguments, how does one vote down what you post? I still like the LIKE and DISLIKE buttons or similar. Frankly, there are quite a few on here that love to personally attack people. Or make unreasonable demands ;-) Or feel they can spew and then complain when it comes around.

In whatever you do, be a gentleman (or lady) first. Reread your posts or be quick to edit them. Don't give offense unless called upon. Wittiness is its own reward in retorts. Facts that counter an unfounded opinion; even better.

Internet on….

Bashytubits15 Oct 2013 11:21 a.m. PST

Who cares if you are stifled? It's rather like real life, if someone doesn't want to listen they will tune you out. The polls I used to enjoy but they took a turn into personal attacks on people and I visit TMP for the great amount of information on our hobby on this site and the historical knowledge base of its members which is considerable. I also like the many witty comments by a lot of different people. One other thing, what is a "wibbler"?

Lord Raglan15 Oct 2013 1:52 p.m. PST

Careful gentlemen, Bill locked my account because I stifled one of his young female editors earlier this year. He then played word games with me for over a week before re-instating the account.

I fail to see why Bill thinks it is important to make a big deal of who he employs. I certainly don't want to see photos of very young looking women paraded across a wargaming site that is mainly the domain of middle aged men.

Its all a bit odd.

Dump the ridiculous "I somehow NEED to KNOW how many times I've been Stifled" information on our personal pages…

We've had vote after vote, and the TMP community wants to keep the Stifle system.

Dump the "Stifle Industrial Complex", treat supporting members like VALUED CUSTOMERS…

I believe everyone can Stifle, not only Supporting Members…

Will the third editor also be a young female?

I don't believe employers are supposed to divulge age and gender information about their workers, so… no comment. grin

TMPs upgraded membership is the only membership I have not renewed where the organisation didn't follow it up and remind me and/or ask why I didn't renew.

It gives the impression that it isn't bothered.

I suppose you didn't notice the renewal request that was on the homepage for the last few weeks of your membership?

Then it gives away free memberships …

Sometimes, usually at Christmas, to those who seem deserving or unable to afford memberships.

What do the new Editors think? Heaven forbid they break rank and tell us. If the Editors want our money then perhaps they should let us know where they stand on the issue.

They have been elsewhere today, but I will ask them to read this and add comments if they like. However, the decision is traditionally made by vote of the membership, not by the editors.

I think you just answered your own question. Over the years, as the website workload has increased, I have had to cut functionality. The new editors will be able to reverse that trend.

I personally would love non-gaming related articles (except for Utter Drivel) put on the Plus boards where they belong, and not in the normal section.

Hit the Complaint button on off-topic articles, and Julia will look into it.

Plus, I'd love to see the Polls back. frown They were a silly distraction that I liked.

New editors make that possible.

I can understand one but three in a very short period of time seems abit much.

That's what I initially thought, but Julia cannot handle everything – it's a huge workload. Also, having the extra editors gives us redundancy in case someone moves on…

I gave another 3 months, but 4 days on and have yet to be activated…

Apologies. I'm the choke point – all of the editors are at some stage of being trained, and there are still tasks which only I can do at the moment.

And the 2 (now 3?) overseas "editors" seem… weird.. to me.

I have Philippine connections due to family and other projects. Also, word is getting out that working for TMP is a really great job… (would you rather work in a call center?)

Careful gentlemen, Bill locked my account because I stifled one of his young female editors earlier this year. He then played word games with me for over a week before re-instating the account.

The server automatically Locks your account if you stifle any of the editors. It has been this way for years. There's a warning in the FAQ. So if you ask me why your account is suddenly locked, I will probably ask you, "did you stifle anyone lately?" Not word games, just trying to help you.

I fail to see why Bill thinks it is important to make a big deal of who he employs. I certainly don't want to see photos of very young looking women paraded across a wargaming site that is mainly the domain of middle aged men.

I don't think we need to hide our editors from public view. Their age and gender really has nothing to do with it. They deserve to be recognized for joining the TMP team.

Silent Pool15 Oct 2013 3:51 p.m. PST

We've had vote after vote, and the TMP community wants to keep the Stifle system.

How come people are missing the point. The OP comment about stifling is not about whether to keep the function, regardless if "the TMP community wants to keep the Stifle system". It is about doing away with the ridiculous and offensive Stifle Table. What do folk think about that one?

Mr Editor, as you are in a chatty mood today, can you answer THAT question, please.

I like TMP a plenty, I want to remain a member, and I have money to spend on TMP sponsorship but I, like Andrew Preziosi, have a real bone of contention with that Bleeped textty Table.

Anyway, that is not new to you.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian15 Oct 2013 4:51 p.m. PST

We've had votes on that too, and plenty of other Stifle-related questions, and the membership has always voted to keep the system as it is now.

If you want to see it changed, post to the TMP Poll Suggestions Board, and we can vote one more time… grin

I really don't care either way.

Bashytubits15 Oct 2013 5:58 p.m. PST

I have no idea what a stiffle is, where it happens or what it entails. Have I been stiffled without my knowledge?

Is this a war gaming site or a kiddies playground? Makes me wonder when I read these type of posts.

15th Hussar15 Oct 2013 6:45 p.m. PST

Funny Bill.

YOU, the Editor, instituted the Stifle Results Table on members home pages.

You know what…and this is going to crack you up…it's very possible for you to remove this same table without "polling" the community.

That's a real knee slapper, isn't it!

Privateer4hire15 Oct 2013 6:59 p.m. PST

Could it be set up so folks could toggle it off?

For example I don't follow Civil War gaming and so I don't select the little doo hickey what corresponds with CW. Any chance such a feature could be done to please both sides (chocolate and peanut butter)?

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian15 Oct 2013 7:59 p.m. PST

it's very possible for you to remove this same table without "polling" the community.

Of course it is… but why would I do that when the community voted to keep it? Why should your desires trump the majority?

Could it be set up so folks could toggle it off?

So people could hide the Stifle Table?

jdginaz15 Oct 2013 9:38 p.m. PST

"Why should your desires trump the majority?"

Don't you know Bill some people's opinions are more important than other? Well at least in their own eyes.

Bill,

You know exactly what I am talking about, I spelt it out loud and clear during our previous discussion?

I am pretty sure that most TMPers don't care who you employ, however the issue here is your questionable motives for deciding to parade these young women on the front page like some trophy. As I said to you previously, you will be judged and people will make their own mind up about you.

Actually I am bright enough to have noticed that wink … That is an automated reminder, it is not a 'follow up'.

Just about every organisation or business, from the smallest club to the multinational institution does so – except TMP.

Anyway, I am pleased to see you are taking the feedback on this thread, so thankyou for answering …

Phil

badwargamer16 Oct 2013 2:15 a.m. PST

Why hide the stifle table….just don't go and read it. Click on something you want to read instead. It's not on the front page, you have to deliberately go and find it. If you don't like it why would you bother going to look at it?

Reminds me of those people who used to write into 'Points of view' complaining about a tv program they didn't like. Well, don't watch it and let the people who do like it watch it.
In my own opinion the stifle table is childish, but some people like it so let them enjoy it. As I always say being stifled has no effect on the person being stifled, unless they are deliberately looking for a way to be offended.

badwargamer16 Oct 2013 2:16 a.m. PST

PS. should have said that if you don't like it then of course you have the right to complain, but as some point you have to let it go and accept the majority aren't bothered by it.

…the issue here is your questionable motives for deciding to parade these young women on the front page like some trophy. As I said to you previously, you will be judged and people will make their own mind up about you.

I think this has only happened three times:

1. When we published an article about training the first assistant editor. (Picture of Julia)
2. When Julia got her air conditioning (picture of Julia with a/c)
3. Announcement of the hire of Claire.

I just don't see how this constitutes "parading" anyone like a trophy. It seems like normal activity to me.

No offense taken, again…I enjoy looking at the equivalent of how many times I've been "shot out of the sky" by fellow TMP'ers at this point in time, I've learned how to grow a thick skin. wink

On CSW, you can choose to "Ignore" someone (sounds nicer than Stifle, doesn't it) and no one needs to know the wiser, on both ends of the equation.

Life goes on…keep those Stifles coming though Ffolkes!

How on earth is this normal behaviour?

I am not aware of any other wargame related company that feels the need to publicize the fact it employs young Asian females and moreover, puts accompanying photos of them on its website. A couple of these photos make them look like pubescent teenagers – your actions disgust me.
