I've been very lucky to receive pictures of Dave Perry's painted figures ( Dave is ex-GW Studio/Eavy Metal from the 1990s ) . I'll be adding them to my blog in chunks – so far I've uploaded some of his Rogue Trader era Eldar ( link ) and his Realm of Chaos figures ( link ) . Loads more to come! Cheers, Steve.

Apologies for the deceptive title – there's fantasy in this collection as well as sci-fi! :-)

Links so that they work:

Oops – thanks Bryan!

The Eldar look great, I have most of those myself and the helmeted leader pointing on the top of the link has to be one of my all time favorite Citadel figures. Thanks for posting!

Wow, beautiful! The yellow that Dave applied to those Eldar is really top-notch.

Nice highlighting on the yellows.
And those gems are really well done!

Were those done back then or recent?

Back then as far as I'm aware.

Thanks for posting those, they're amazing.

You know, whatever you think of GW (and I don't think much), it's easy to see how they got to be the 500-lb gorilla on the block. Aside from the jaw-dropping paint on these specific figures, there's something just incredibly charming about those sculpts.

Man, what a brutal and sarcastic bio. How much more British can you get?! LOL It certainly explains my and others disenchantment with GW regarding dumping the old so readily… I sure miss what were Specialist Games! Please bring back Man O' War or expand Dreadfleet!

Those were truly the best days.

great paint work .

I remember way back when,GW was always my inspiration to paint figures and build terrain to higher standards. Many of my terrain techniques that I use today are from their terrain books- I had bought Ian Weekly's book on buildings, etc, but couldnt really make much headway with it.It wasnt until The GW version came out that things really popped for me.Too bad they have gone away from their old hobby friendly ways.

Man. Where the hell did these go off the tracks? Why did the miniatures at that time have so much character and the ones today require so much work to get the same "oomph" out of them?

Beautiful figures and both the paint job and bright colors look great. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Wow . . Those are sweet. I still have a bunch of Eldar from that era. Even the two Heavy weapon models, which I also painted with a yellow theme, trying to match some great looking models from when they used to have their Heavy Metal painting columns in the old GW white Dwarf. Nowhere near as good as those.

Well, I actually like what they are producing these days. It is amazing too. BUT, I miss the one stop shop that they were. What they don't realize is that by eliminating the Specialist Games, they have eliminated another gateway to their wares. They can argue all they want about what is profitable but the very fact I can't get the Specialist stuff means I also stay away from their core products.

I understand marketing and the thoughts behind their decisions but they miss out a lot with this strategy. I guarantee you I spent way more on all of their Specialist offerings then I ever spent on their core games. And way more than most hobbyists as well that did do core products. I have thousands of dollars worth of Epic for instance.

I have tons of Man O War as well too. Was buying up the Mighty Empires stuff until it was sold out locally as well. I used to have thousands in Warmaster as well. I sold off most of my core product stuff, although I still have some fantasy and 40K stuff around.

They stopped being a hobby company a long time ago. If it wasn't for bringing back BloodBowl and the release of DreadFleet, I would accuse them of totally forgetting gamers in general and solely attracting collectors. Which I guess is okay but they have chased away so many customers locally and IMO have lost more than they would gain with new customer turnover. How many on here have stopped buying from them after being loyal customers? So, so, many!

I don't hate them though. They really do put out some great products. I just lament that they continually miss the boat on marketplace expansion by abandoning hobbyists and gamers like me that love variety. Yes, they can be expensive but I have gotten my money's worth in the past and would hope to do so again if they were ever to return to some of the other things that worked well for them.
