"Ten years since Joss Whedonfs western-in-space cult classic Firefly went off the air, the rabidity of its fandom, better known as the Browncoats, hasnft waned at all. Rather, since the advent of streaming video services like Netflix, the show has found even more fans, as its fourteen episodes and subsequent follow-up film, Serenity, became more easily accessible than ever for those of us who maybe missed the boat back in 2002-2003. Couple that with Joss Whedonfs unparalleled success at the box office with 2012Œs Avengers, and you have a fever pitch for all things in which the Firefly maestro has had a hand. But the perennial Change.org petitions to bring Firefly back from the grave arenft going to get the job done. No, Firefly/Serenityes phoenix is rising from the ashes of cancellation in a different form: a comic book.

After teasing fans for months with a #WheresSerenity social media campaign, Dark Horse Comics is kicking off NYCC with a bang, revealing to Nerdist that its much-whispered about Firefly-verse comic is finally here, and itfs even got a Whedon, to boot. Break out a bowl of strawberries to celebrate, because Zack Whedon is officially going to write Serenity: Leaves on the Wind, a six issue mini-series for Dark Horse Comics with the potential to be ongoing. We already knew that the delightful Georges Jeanty (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) would be handling artwork, but pairing the artist with Zack Whedon seems like a match made in nerd heaven. Now, we are faced with the Sisyphean task of containing our excitement until January 29th, when the first issue finally hits stands.

Despite being related to the franchisefs creator, a property like Serenity has a lot of fan expectation attached to it. As one commenter wrote on the #WheresSerenity announcement page, gIf you eff this upc.consequences.h Granted, most of those consequences will come in the form of angry digital fist-shaking, but no one wants to anger their audience. Fortunately, Whedon has considerable experience working on comic books based on existing franchises like Terminator and Star Wars, so this isnft his first rodeo based on a beloved title. If anything, Fireflyfs well-established world allows Whedon gto find these charactersf voices more easily, probably because I have so much existing material to draw from.h…"

Sigh. No Wash, no Book. Oh well.

Schogun11 Oct 2013 2:31 p.m. PST

They could go back before the kill-off.

I've read that Whedon has considered other stories/films in the Firefly universe, but not Serenity and its crew.

River as a pilot with a Reaver-killer reputation, Kalie & Simon hot&heavy, Mal & Inara back together, Jayne with his rep…Niska and Badger are still out there..seems lively enough.
Add Sam Elliot as a Browncoat version of Raphael Semmes…

I think Wash could be easily brought back into the series.

One day, Zoe is doing ship stuff when she stumbles on something and bangs her knee. She winces in pain -- but stops, when she hears Wash making fun of her lack of gracefulness. It's just at the edge of her hearing, but still…

Now she's in bed, almost asleep, when she hears Wash making the idle bedtime chatter he always made. The bed is empty, of course. Now it feels all the emptier.

Now Serenity is careening through upper atmo to avoid (or get into) some kind of trouble. Zoe bangs on the intercom to tell Mal/River to take it easy -- but it's Wash's voice she hears reply. Stunned, she stumbles to her bunk.

Soon, she's seeing and hearing Wash everywhere. He's constantly cracking jokes and offering commentary on the crew's latest adventures and exciting new crime. Black-market beagles may be involved.

Maybe Zoe is cracking up. Maybe Wash is actually haunting the ship where he died. She doesn't know. But she thinks she can't tell anyone without being retired to a remote moon somewhere, and thus she is constantly struggling to keep her composure. She's tore up plenty, but she'll fly true…

If you've read the comic concerning Book's origins, there's a possibility that he could download into a new body through that bionic eye in his head.

In a first draft of the Serenity script, River displayed a remarkable clairvoyant ability to recall a past encounter between Mal and Inara. Perhaps she can act as a medium and manifest Wash ala the movie "Ghost"?

Just have Wash's sister(Alan Tudyk in drag)come to the ship to pick up his effects…especially those antique dino toys from Earth That Was.

Yep, that's my plan. Serenity was terrible.

That's where I live in the 'Verse.

Good fan art is incredibly rare, OFM, and it goes way beyond simple technical skill.

Yep, that's my plan. Serenity was terrible.

That's how I deal with modern Star Wars and most post-season-8 Simpsons episodes.

Ah, the same method I've successfully applied to Alien3, Alien: Resurrection, and any Highlander movie after the original…
