Those are lovely, especially the decorated horse trappings!

Nice work Lorenzo beautiful looking paintjob, which the figures deserve, the AB/Battle Honours figs are really nice, but I still hate those hats.. and the crossed bands on the chests should really be reserved for the 1%

Stunning artwork. I tried to make Sassanid army with AB but gave up in the end because the cast on lances were so thin it seemed impossible to stop them from bending. You seem to have overcome that problem – so well done.

I like your colour combinations and decorations. Your posting is just in time for my own project, Rome and her enemies (Severan Dynasty):

I really love your inspiring paintwork ! Only one question about the figures: many years ago I read somewhere that the Sassanids (like many other heavy cavalry of the period) only used the kontos over arm. The under arm style (so popular with knights some centuries later) was not yet developed. Is this theory out of the window ? Since I do want this army to build, I am very curious ! Thanks in advance for information all !

Really loved to see the fine army well painted. I still love my old Irregular figs though.

"Only one question about the figures: many years ago I read somewhere that the Sassanids (like many other heavy cavalry of the period) only used the kontos over arm. The under arm style (so popular with knights some centuries later) was not yet developed."

There are various depictions – tomb paintings, terracotta, a graffito – showing the lance/kontos being used _two handed_ under arm. These include Sarmatian, Parthian and whoever is shown at Dura – Palmyran or Sasanian probably.

GurKhan11 Oct 2013 9:57 a.m. PST

The most relevant depiction for this army being Prince Shapur at Firuzabad – link – and there are plenty of other early-mid Sasanian carvings as well. This is very different from the one-handed mediaeval couched-lance posture.

Very nice sir!

Just curious is there an actual artifact of the "Marge Simpson" helmet anywhere or is it based on artist depictions? Is it known what material it was made of?

Fotherington Thrip12 Oct 2013 9:02 p.m. PST

I had some of the AB Sassanid's for DBA, nowhere near as nicely painted as these though, and sold them off due to the skinny kontos.

If I get them again I would:

A. Paint them better, and
B. Cut off the kontos and replace using the steel pikes you get from Xyston

Beautiful work LorenzoMele!
