I know the hobby paints are better. Hobby Lobby runs specials on there paints often and I have gift cards for there as well. Are there any colors that people think are very useful decent the issues of craft paint. in Folk Art or Delta or any of the other popular craft paints? |

I like their browns, grays and greens. Lots of variety and solid coverage. I own 400+ different bottles of them. Thanks, John |

I guess I should have clarified I was wondering more about specifics colors and what people used them for. Im slowly buying them but will read paint guides later that people make and they'll use colors I never thought to. More a pre-emptive thing really and making more informed purchases. |

Delta Ceramcoats Trail Tan is infinitely useful. It is better than any equivalent color in any hobby brand I've ever found as far as coverage goes. It is a perfect basecoat for unbleached linen and highlights Cel Vinyl's Tan perfectly for AWI and British Buff colour. Another one from Delta is antique white which is just as good as any hobby version. The browns I've found don't cover so well. Dark blues work pretty well if you are doing them over black. |

My favorite is Apple Barrel's Territorial Beige. For twenty years, I have used it for basing. Paint on a thick layer, them heavily apply green flock while it is still wet. It holds the flock really well, and on the off chance the flock wears away, the paint simulates dirt underneath. |

99% of the paints I use are the brands which have been named. They are just simply easy to use and readly available to me. I still have a few favorite enamel paints. |

I use mostly craft paint these days. When I first started, I bought about $200 USD worth of Reaper and Vallejo paints. Now I'm kicking myself as I have found no real difference between them and craft paint when I just thin up the craft paint a little. |

"Spanish Olive" from AC Moore is great for Olive Drab and similar colors. I once use GHQ's Olive Drab and Khaki Drab on a 15mm figure and could not spot any difference without bright lights and my painting glasses. Certain desert yellows work great for Dunkelfritzawhatchacallit. |

Leather – Americana Russet, I either highlight it over dark brown, or do a redish highlight on the Russet Looks good to me Chris |

What I found works best is taking swatches of the color you want and matching the paint in the bottle to the swatch. Almost all of them work fine, sometimes with a bit of thinner. Since Craft paints are so inexpensive it is no problem getting a few clunkers. (I've had 5 or less useless clunkers over the years – my big problem is buying EXTRA 'just in case I need more') |
