I am just about ready to start putting together a brigade of Spanish foot for the Peninsular campaign c. 1808-10. Can anyone recommend some good 28mm figs for this project? What about uniform information? Thanks in advance. Kyle |

1808-1810 saw the last of the white 1806 and light blue 1802(?) uniforms being worn out, after that it's very much a matter of units grabbing what was available, so lots of blue and brown uniforms, and guys with little or no "uniform" at all. Front Rank has some useful generic Spanish infantry in single-breasted coats and shakos or top hats: link IMO, the Spanish are very ill-served by 28mm miniature manufacturers for the period between the 1808 white uniform with bicorne and the 1812+ British-supplied uniforms. Possibly because Spanish uniforms of this period were very idiosyncratic and are poorly documented. Still, it's a pity, since they are missing the middle part of the war. Here's a primer on the topic, linked from another post about Spanish units at Albuera: link |

I've got all Front Rank for my Spanish since they can come in already built (and slightly cheaper) battalion packs. But I did see on TMP some time ago where someone used the Victrix Early War French to create a Spanish unit so perhaps that is an option as well. Larry |

Hat announced 28mm Spanish in the appropriate uniforms 2 or 3 years ago, but nothing seems to have materialised; a pity as the initial figures looked very good. |

Brigade Games has a relatively new line of them available. They are some terrific sculpts, too. |

The Brigade Games Spanish are very nice, like all their products. But they are in the white 1806 uniform, which mostly disappeared after the first few years. |

Brigade Games Elite Miniatures Front Rank Are the ones I would go with. Eagle Miniatures Captain Miniatures Also really good – especially the Captain Miniatures models. Blazeaway (not released yet) – will be a good range if ever released. Minifigs Hinchliffe I think that there actually quite a few manufacturers. HaT are making 28mm plastics as well sometime in the near future. A little thin compared to most other manufacturers but they are getting better with every release I think. So quite a few off the top of my head – I am sure that I have missed a couple. |

Actually, if you wanted to do a militia style battalion then the Perry Carlist packs – "non uniformed militia" might well serve: link Add them to the Capitan Miniatures command figures (militia battalions often had a cadre of regular troops to provide command and attempt training) and you have quite a nice unit. |

Thanks for the advice on miniatures. The tricky part looks like identifying uniforms. If I were to assemble a brigade c. 1809, units could be comprised of white coats and militia? Are there any good OOBs out there for Spanish armies c. 1809? |

Front Rank Offensive miniatures and Brigade Games. Only FR do cavalry out of those three I think. Front rank and Brigade both do some excellent Guerillas aswell. |

I know that Funcken books are dated but that is what I have for Spanish info right now. They state that in 1808 Spain adopted the British style of uniforms in light blue. Would any of the white uniforms still be around in 1809? |

Dear Kyle This is a complex area. Two regiments were still in their 1793 uniform, 20ish in M1803 light blue and only the remainder in M1805 white uniforms. This is documented in our new book avaible in April 2014. In 1809, some uniforms were replaced by British manufactured. It was not until at least 1810 that uniforms of the M1803/M1805 were replaced. Stephen, what book are you referring to on the subject? |

Gerard Cronin and Stephen Summerfield (April 2014) Spanish Army of the Early Peninsular War, Ken Trotman Publishing. It should have been out 6 months ago but the printer went out of business. I should be sending it to the printer in Jan/Feb so in time for April 2014. Stephen |

The Eagle Miniatures are very nice for the more proportional style of 28mm figures.
(n.b. the figures are great, I'm making no claims that my painting does them justice! )
