Ha!!!!!!!!

In response to socalwargamer, there is already a Greek phrase that answers that satisfactorily:

molon labe*

Look at how the English speaking world has butchered "gyro" a pita sandwich or the rotisseried meat it contains.

Over here, that's pronounced "kebab". grin

*I tried entering it in Greek, but IE8 or TMP didn't like it.

ahh Kebab

In some areas of these United States, "Gyro" has been phonetically replaced with "hero". It was actually used in a line from the film "Kelly's Heroes" where oddball declares:

"To a New Yorker like you, a hero is some type of weird sandwich, not some nut who takes on three Tigers."

Unfortunately, those pics, regardless of the accuracy you point out, don't hold true everywhere in these United States. Gyro & Hero are interchangeable in some sections, especially where no Greek community exists to show the difference.

And as for Hero, again THAT name may be replaced with Sub, Torpedo, Italian, etc sometimes even within the same city!

So, yeah……. it fits with this entire discussion: Words can (and often do) have multiple meanings, and pronunciation(s) are fungible. grin

Well, that's all as clear as mud!

Cerdic09 Oct 2013 11:01 a.m. PST

I thought a gyro was similar to a helicopter?

TKindred09 Oct 2013 10:46 p.m. PST

Ah yes. The Autogyro.
