I just finished applying a bunch of kite shield transfers to Normans and Saxon huscarls alike. I am cross-eyed and my head hurts. These are Old Glory 15 mm figures, which have a rim around the shield. (This breaks a 4 week painting block, so is a good thing.)

How should I paint the rims? Metallic, or match the shield transfer as much as possible. Oh yeah, I have to paint the bosses metallic once the transfers dry.

And I have a bunch of spearmen and Fyrd that still need to be primed…

Metal rims would probably be very rare, though not impossible. The Bayeux Tapestry shows a lot of shields with brownish rims that might be leather binding, and others with no apparent rim.

Thank you, that's a big help. I'll do some to match the transfer, others brown.

In other words all shields had a leather rim, but some were painted over and some weren't.
