Nice ships. Made from hunks of styrene rod of various shapes?

Yep.

Very good, as good if not better than some stuff available from wargames companies!

x2 goodness.

Looks good!

gameorpaint20 Sep 2013 12:57 p.m. PST

Great job. Nice to see how far you can go with nothing much more than basic shapes.

Yeah, they were pretty simple to build. I think the hardest thing was keeping the engine nacelles the same size and layout – wanted something as a unifying look, although it retrospect going totally unique with each ship might have worked just as well. If I ever resume the project I may go that route.

Those are excellent. They very much have a "Gunboat" feel to them.

Rodrick Campbell Fezian20 Sep 2013 3:53 p.m. PST

All right. I have to say it… those are really cool!

justBill20 Sep 2013 5:02 p.m. PST

Fantastic work as always!

Thought of making some molds and casting up some more?

Not with those two. If I ever find the time to do more sculpts I might see if I can pitch them as masters to one of the existing starship casters – I'm on decent terms with several companies who might be willing to take them on. Don't really care to spend the money for molds myself.

Rich you have a good eye for putting shapes together to form something useful! I'll echo Angel Barracks above. Good or better than stuff on the market now.

Yepper, just the way I imagine my things coming together. Never do.

I suppose you use something other than 'put in a box, add a few drops of cement, and shake' method. Always thought it might work better if I cut the pieces up, first.

Ah, I see your problem. It has to be a vigorous shake. :)

Seriously, these (and the old Startown Slums terrain pieces that MKP makes these days) weren't hard to make, just time-consuming and a little fiddly. A good pair of tweezers and an optivisor help a lot. I suspect a competent CG artist could easily crank out similar designs faster – they're mostly agglomerations of cylinders or sections of cylinders – and sell them through Shapeways. Don't have the skills for it myself, unfortunately.
