While this seldom happens anymore, I run Savage Worlds as a spur of the moment game,,,,and sometimes Paranoia, Cortex games are also pretty straight forward if my imagination isn't too rusty. Often I'll pick out a rough story-line and then let the players handle the rules
..I've discovered that letting them handle the details and me the background and flow worked out pretty good. That way I didn't have to memorize the rules, just get the just of it down (Part of getting old and having a family is not having prep time). It has been a few years since we did anything though. Champions (4th ed) would be my best emergency pickup RPG. Any player without their own character gets given one of my many NPC heroes to run. But like many, been years since I've done any roleplaying. Great to see a lot of love for Traveller though. I started with 1st Ed around 1980 and it always has my heart. The Mongoose edition is pretty good, though. |

Classic Traveller, as all the tables almost generate the plot on their own. Can't be beat for open-ended one-shot adventures, requiring minimal GM prep. Also a fun game. |

It also depends who's in the group. I know a few people who don't like D&D, so we played HERO. It can be used for any genre. |
