… Machine Gun-Wielding Headless Horseman.

"If I had to point to the exact moment that I knew Sleepy Hollow was going to be my favorite new show of the year, I'm pretty sure it would be the scene where the Headless Horseman whipped out an assault rifle and tried to gun down Ichabod Crane in slow motion.

That's the great thing about the pilot for the show, which premiered on FOX last night: It's well aware that its premise — taking that 1820 Washington Irving story about the folly of superstition and wrenching it into the modern day for a mismatched buddy cop serial about secret covens dueling over the apocalypse through a series of X-Files-esque unsolved mysteries — is ridiculous to the point of being laughable. Structurally, the whole first episode is an exercise in stacking one handy plot contrivance on top of another until they've built a foundation for the series that almost majestic in its fragility, held together purely by the Scotch tape of the cast's likability, and how fun its ideas are. Spoilers follow.

After dying on a mission for George Washington, Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) wakes up in modern times after a 232-year coma and learns that he survived because he got some of his blood magically mixed up with a supernaturally unstoppable enemy soldier that he decapitated during a Revolutionary War battle. (Guess who!) The cop who finds him, Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie), is initially skeptical that he's been asleep for two centuries — presumably she knows that's the other famous Irving story — but she's willing to believe him since she had her own supernatural experience when she was a kid…"

I was that exact moment when I lost all interest.

PraetorianHistorian18 Sep 2013 2:45 a.m. PST

I found it to be some mindless, fun entertainment. Plus, my wife liked it and her liking ANYTHING that mentions history is a rarity.

I have to say that I loved the review :) I might have to catch an episode. I tend to enjoy mindless entertainment.

Gloria Smud18 Sep 2013 5:42 a.m. PST

I remember when it was called Tarrytown

jdpintex18 Sep 2013 5:44 a.m. PST

Mindless is right. But I like it anyway.

Certainly much better that "dads" last nite. Saw five minutes after taking the dog out. For a minute there I thought I had tracked something back into the house.

PzGeneral18 Sep 2013 6:02 a.m. PST

Yup.. Linda and I liked it. We're both "Supernatural" fans and I kept looking for Sam and Dean to bust in guns a'blaz'n!!

Enjoy it for what it is…..don't look too deep.

It may also have inspired me to spend some money with Blue Moon Manufacturing…… grin

The best thing I can say is, it was entertaining enough to suffer through it as my kids watch it. They liked it and will want to watch it again, so that pushes it into the realm of tolerable.

I'll wait and see … has not turned me off yet, was entertaining … But I still believe the best Sleepy Hollow "rendition" is the Tim Burton – Johnny Depp movie …. And I would like to see how Sam and Dean would have handled the Horseman ! evil grin

This Sleepy Hollow Hoodie Is the Stuff of Nightmares. Let's Photoshop It

"A package arrived at WIRED headquarters recently. This is not unusual; publicists frequently send packages to publications. They often contain press kits and branded merchandise of various types, which seek to curry editorial favor and attention. The recent press kit for the FOX television show Sleepy Hollow succeeded. This is because it contained a Sleepy Hollow hoodie that is intended to make you look like the Headless Horseman, but actually makes you look like a British Revolutionary War soldier wearing a bondage mask. In a word, it is terrifying.

The package that contained this nightmare also included a press release that invited us – and by extension, of course, our readers – to watch the new show Sleepy Hollow, which premiered Monday night and pulled in a whopping 10.5 million viewers, rating a 3.4 in its target demographic of adults aged 18-49. (In other words, it did really well, especially for FOX, whose shows rarely break even the 8-million-viewer mark.)"Enclosed is a Headless Horseman zip-up costume hoodie," the press release read, "to protect you from demons in your sleepy (or not so sleepy) town."

And out came this monstrosity. To be clear, this is not a garment that will protect you. This is a garment that you need to be protected from. The hoodie is designed around the idea that covering your head in black cloth that resembles fetish gear and/or a bee mask will create the optical illusion that your head has disappeared. After blackmailing encouraging our coworker Robbie Baldwin of Gadget Lab to wear it, sealing himself within its fabric shell — and possibly, sealing his soul to its grim power — we can confirm that it does not do this at all. It does, however, make you look very, very creepy…"

Watching the trailer made me think mini series, at best. It's an interesting concept but I don't think it will go long distance.

Coelacanth193818 Sep 2013 8:18 p.m. PST

Give it a chance.
Can't be worst than Supernatural.

CorpCommander18 Sep 2013 8:24 p.m. PST

I stopped watching around 18 seconds in.

The rebels are accepting an attack on their fortified position. They have cannon and excellent breastworks. The British have somehow been hooked into crossing extremely broken ground, through a wood to attack these insurgents. Ok, pretty implausible but whatever. A lot of British Officers at that time bought their commissions so maybe.

At 18 seconds in the rebels leave a perfectly good defensive position to attack the Red Coats who have bayonets. It's 1781. Ok. This is going to be complete and total crap.

I watched a bit more. Will finish it later. The only redeeming factor is they have the Kurgen (Highlander film, played by Clancy Brown) so I can pretend he's going to go all flashing swords on people.

PzGeneral18 Sep 2013 9:04 p.m. PST

CC….you'll be disappointed.

But he does have really good Gun Control……

A Twiningham19 Sep 2013 5:30 a.m. PST

Fun fact, the Kurgen / Clancy Brown is also the voice of Eugene Krabs on SpongeBob. Still not enough to get me to watch that steaming pile of…programming.

I like Supernatural and looks like I will like Sleepy Hollow … we'll see … so like in many things in life, every one is entitled to an opinion, but if you don't like something don't watch it … old fart As far as gun control … if you don't like guns … don't buy one … evil grin

Entertaining despite two annoying anachronisms by Crane. I'll watch more just to see who are witches.

Col Durnford19 Sep 2013 11:55 a.m. PST

I did love the part where Crane fire the pistol and said it was empty after one shot.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP In the TMP Dawghouse19 Sep 2013 1:12 p.m. PST

Yeah, that was a great line !

Mithmee19 Sep 2013 1:29 p.m. PST

But they killed Clancy Brown character off.

He could have made this show even more fun to watch.

Oh and I did watch the first show last night and will watch it again.

Oh and that great looking Lt Mills will need to get Crane a bit up to speed on the future.

But yes I will be watching this show.

Just cause a character dies, on a show like this, does not mean they won't be back … evil grin
