In The Princess Bride, there is a scene where Wesley and Buttercup are crossing the Fire Swamp when Buttercup steps into the lightning sand. Wesley jumps in to rescue her, of course. Have you ever held your breath while they're in the sand, just to see if it is possible for human beings to hold their breath that long and still remain conscious? Grelber |

I know I can't hold my breath that long. But then I can't scale the side of a cliff either, but there are people who do that sort of thing just for fun every day. So just because I can't doesn't mean it isn't possible. |

You can train yourself to hold your breath that long. You just start out and hold it for as long as you can, and then keep working at it till you can hold it for longer periods. Free dive divers are good for four minutes. |

B: The Fire Swamp? We'll never survive!W: You're just saying that because no one has before. I have tried it, but I think it was in another movie (probably Alien IV, where they are swimming underwater for 10 minutes or so. In spite of my screen name, I obviously couldn't do it). Ron |

Holding your breath for minutes at a time? Inconceivable. I wonder if it would be more difficult with the pressure of the sand pushing against your chest? |

Ne er tried. I do however use quotes from that movie almost every day. There was a kid here in the Midwest about a month ago that got swallowed by the sand and was under for a couple ous. Found him and he is just fine. |

I had a friend who was a synchronized swimming coach. I retired from competitive breath holding in abysmal defeat. |

I frequently do that when there's "hold your breath" scenes in movies. Sometimes I make it, sometimes I don't, and sometimes I cheat. Rob |

Almost always with any breath-holding scene. You have to. |

It also helps to be in good shape. Not really. You can be holding you breath for double your star time in a couple of hours. If you have lung problems, then their might be problems. I wonder if it would be more difficult with the pressure of the sand pushing against your chest? Really depends on how deep they went. Think how easy it is to get up when the kids cover you with sand at the beach, and that sand is denser. |

I have to agree that you can hold your breath pretty long in the movies – when I dive to the bottom of our pool to gather up leaves (or the things the kids have tossed in) seems to me I can't hold it all that long Probably help if I was in better shape |
