Looks different enough to my eye:
But I agree it's darn close

Selling it with "BFG" in the title is a bit over the top! |

Big Fething Guns, right? Also, the prices they're charging are in line with or higher than the collectible level prices folks are already charging for their authentic Battle Fleet Gothic stuff. |

Got to wonder if that guy is freaking out since Shapeways put his model on their Front Page!!! If he was trying to fly under the radar at all, he just got de-stealthed

Interestingly enough, GrimDarkBits had a huge range of not-GW items for several years including an extensive range of 6mm scale Necrons ( Which were quite different from GW's Epic Necrons) and some versions of obsolete Epic vehicles and figures like Marine dreads and Eldar tanks. Those have all been taken from the store leaving only the BFG style ships, some Epic bases and terrain and the Orkish tanks for sale, in the last few weeks. Which makes me wonder if some legal deal has been done over the limits of what he can and can't produce. |

Isn't FW / GW not supporting some of these Specialist ranges anymore? Somebody has to pick up the slack. |

28mm Fanatic, I was in a GW store recently and during the usual interrogation about what I played, i mentioned Epic and BFG. The response? "Oh yeah – Forge World got shot of all those games in just a week! That's so cool!" Not a hint of irony. |

So, GW owns the rights on all Flying Cathedrals in Space? What if they are Byzantine in style, and not Gothic? I do realize that they own the exclusive rights to Bad Latin. |

So, GW owns the rights on all Flying Cathedrals in Space? Disney might have an objection:

John the OFM stated -"I do realize that they own the exclusive rights to Bad Latin." J K Rowling will argue that one out . . . :) |

When you are that far on top, everybody wants a piece of the action. Its mind boggling how many 'almost gw' items are out there. There are whole 'not warhammer'armies, tons of 'not 40k' stuff. I am especially fond of the shoulder pads 'not gw' that you can use to create your own unique 'not 40k' army. Be the first on your street
Its also a boon to the cottage industry that space marine armour looks a lot like plate armour
. Any out of work IP lawyers should check in with GW they probably could use a few more
heh. |

Parzival, you've got the wrong fleet. Grimdarkbits' ship is a *Heresy* boat, which means that it's a Chaos ship. The fore and aft sections are very similar to the original plastic cruisers, while midships is somewhat evocative of an Imperial broadside. (I've occasionally pondered buying this very ship. I've got a set of rules I've been working on that would benefit from having Chaos boats between the escorts and the cruisers in weight.) |

This one of the cases where GW would have to go to court and like the Samsung vs Apple spend money to convince the judge with a lot of diagrams and arguments that the model is indeed a copyright infringement. More likely is that they will send the guy a C&D letter or request Shapeways remove the models as it violates their IP. CF all the discussions about Spot the Space Marine

nazrat | 05 Sep 2013 7:25 a.m. PST |
It's certainly a blatant rip-off. But maybe GW is gun shy after their last debacle in court
|
ancientsgamer | 05 Sep 2013 1:44 p.m. PST |
Do tell about the debacle with a link please! ;-) I am okay as the design is new. The paint job makes it look similar but there are differences. No different than if someone were to come out with dwarves and GW claiming they own it when the design is substantively different. By the way, GW has a copyright on Battlefleet Gothic, not BFG
. LOL! |

Patrick R declared – "More likely is that they will send the guy a C&D letter or request Shapeways remove the models as it violates their IP." As I said in my first comment here, given the large number of items he had in the store, like the very different Epic scale Necrons which looked better than the GW ones, compared to what is left, I believe he did. And what is left is kosher as far as GW are concerned. |
