A quick experiment with one of Zvezda's new T-72s and a piece of N scale fencing:

That is very clever – well done indeed!

Great job. Were they deployed with both ERA and cage armor ? I saw only T 62 without era.

What is the fencing producer ?
I love your work here. (Great touch with falling era piece.

I can bet the driver wishes the cage extended up along the flanks towards him instead of those ridiculously thin armour plates.

Excellent, thanks.

Tanks for the comments!

I've changed one of the pictures in the blog post. I fitted out a second T-72 yesterday and this time I took a picture showing what the various pieces of plastic look like after trimming but before assembly. Might be useful to somebody.

AWuuuu, the N scale fencing is made by Ratio, a UK company. Any fencing would do as long as it's small enough.

Finding pictures of the cage and ERA combination has been tricky. Here's a tank with cage armour on the turret and the rear. You can just about see ERA under the netting on the sides: link

The next is even worse! You can see a bit of cage armour silhouetted between the tank and the soldiers on the left:

It isn't great but I saved the best one until last. Here you can clearly see the tank has both ERA and cage armour:

To be honest, even if I hadn't seen images of T-72s with cage armour in Chechnya, I'd have done it anyway. Artistic license!

The cage armor makes sense, really. It's reasonably light for the protection it offers, and there's not the problem with extra explosives going off as with ERA (danger to accompanying infantry).

I'm surprised to see it with ERA, but the mix makes sense. I'm just surprised by the small stand-off distance compared to that of a Stryker.

I ma planing to make it on some 15mm t34 and IS2

(they did it as field upgrade from iron beds frames with metal net under the mattress, birdcages and fencing..)

Ooooh, that's interesting. Something like this might work if you chopped it up: auction

looks great but i'd be afraid it might be fragile when the models are handled a lot. might be a reason to mount the vehicle on a base???

Mehoy Nehoy06 Sep 2013 4:18 p.m. PST

Yup. I mount all my vehicles on bases, Heinz. Otherwise I'd worry about them sliding around in the boxes I keep them in and bashing into each other.
