Dear All,
I am painting up these 15mm old glory late teutonic knights, and I have a heap of these foot spearmen to do.

I cant work out what should be chainmail and what should be what.. can anyone help me?

link

just to clarify, i cant work out what on these figures is chanilmail and what is a tunic etc… i hope this makes sense?

Looks like legs and lower half of the arms are covered in mail.

It looks like some of the poses have mail neck protection as well, can't really make out on the photos. The guys in pot helmets may have leather or cloth neck protection.

All have soft stiffened fabric armor tunic covering upper legs torso and upper half of the arms.

Figure on the left may have a bottom of the cloth tunic showing. I can't make it out from the photos, but it can also be bottom of his mail shirt that shows on his arms.

I have some photos, but i couldnt work out how to attach a photo of mine from my harddrive..

so youve confiremd my suspicions that there is a jacket of some kind. What would this stiffened fabric you mention have looked like?

I painted some 25mm figures from the same period that are somewhat similar to yours. This may help: link

I've got some of these and IGWARG is right.

The fabric armour is an aketon. They could be various colours but I tend to use buff, dull red, dull blue or dull green.

Thank you all so much for that. My question now – is how uniform would Teutonic Knights have been in their foot spearmen? Would they all have used white?

Regular Teutonic army sergeants would usually wear grey sleeveless cloth tunic with black T looking cross over their armor. If you Google images for "Teutonic sergeants" you'll see what I mean.

Those figures of yours do not have that tunic. I suspect that they are just wealthy settlers from lands controlled by Teutonic order. However, you can make them like sergeants by painting their soft armor aketons grey. Paint their shields white with black Teutonic cross or grey with black T cross. You can even paint some of their helmets white with small black cross on the side or the top of the helmet.

If you want them as irregular settler infantry or allied German or Scandinavian infantry – just paint their aketons and shields all kinds of colors. Grey, white, red, blue, green, brown, etc.

I've had a look for a source for this grey shield and tau cross. All I can say is that a recent German book which seems to know its sources shows them with a standard white shield and black cross.

Yes, it does show white shields. It also states, according to my German friend, that knights had no horse armor. Also, according to another book, peasants and even auxiliary tribesmen in Teutonic service could have white shield with Teutonic cross. There are lots of sources in Russian showing everybody in very colorful gear. It is hard to say what source has it totally right.
