Always sad to see a great ship ending.

"She once ruled the waves. Now the 22,000-ton HMS Ark Royal is being ripped apart in a Turkish scrapyard, another victim of British defence cuts.
After a quarter of a century of service, Ark Royal – the fifth vessel to bear a name that dates back to victory over the Spanish Armada – will shortly be reduced to tin cans and razor blades.
This picture shows workers from Leyal Ship Recycling – which paid £2.90 GBP million for the aircraft carrier – stripping out valuable scrap items before larger sections are torn away…"

And so soon after the refit…and so long before the replacement.

HMS ARK ROYAL – Britain's Premier Warship – RO XXXX – Can I help you Sir?

…was how we had to answer the phone when I had the priviledge of serving on HMS Ark Royal from 1987 – 1990. I've laid down my fair share of polish, applied more than a few litres of paint, and strung up a few thousand metres of copper aerial wire on that fine lady!

But I will say this – she was busy during the Cold War – always on demand, exercise after exercise, maintaining the Peace…

And lets not forget the handful of ship's company and aircrew who lost their lives in the service of peace whilst serving on 'the Ark'…

Wast there a BBC series based upon her crew and adventures?

The TV series was about the fifth Ark Royal in the 1970's, which was a proper aircraft carrier with steam catapults and Phantom and Buccaneer Jet fighters and bombers…

And mutton chop side burns too, alas!

Anything that predates Harold Wilson is ok, from Matchbox to the V bomber force. After him it is all OGB.

Once great britain,,,

If she was refit fairly recently, this is just plain dumb. Better to mothball for future needs with a skeleton maintenance crew. They paid nothing for her as scrap.

I saw her still building on Tyneside – have the years gone that quickly?!

Watched her built and saw her launched and fitted out, a sad end.
Still have the single of Rod Stewarts 'we are Sailing' from the TV series, with the crew singing the chorus, and the sound of aircraft going off the 'cats' in the background
