I apologize for what amounts to 3 questions in one.

How are these (old?) ranges for Ancients/medieval? I am seeking "smaller" 25mm figures to be compatible with traditional WRG/DBM basing, and I imagine thse fit the bill, but have never seen these ranges. First, are these all "smaller" 25mm's rather than 28mm's? Second, how is the sculpting for each--is it very minimalistic or do they stand the test of time better than some old Minifigs ranges?

Hi

I dunno. I have a bunch of Garrison and Greenwood and Ball from 25 some years ago. Excellent..not with some of the exaggerated details of most current figs. But actual 25s.

At the time they came out, I thought that they were the best figures around. They are state of the Art... for 1980.

You should have no trouble fitting them on WRG/DBM bases, except for SHC/Kn(X). They will be a tight fit, but it can be done if you use deeper bases and stagger them.

Back in the early 80's I saw a lot of beautiful armies made up of later Garrison/SKT figures. The very early ranges, like Carthaginians and Republican Romans are as accurate as anything at the time. Some, like Persians and Assyrians must be gone through figure by figure to see if they are accurate.

If you are looking for good "true 25mm" figures from days of yore, which are still in production, try Maismith Design adn RAFM. These will definitely fit in WRG/DBM stands, even SHC.

Their QT figures are chunky 25's (25mm to eye-level) from the mid to late '80s.

The Garrison/Greenwood & Ball figures are nice figures, yes true, old 25mm with good detail. The SKT and QT are chunkier and larger. I personally don't like the QT figures due to the set series of poses. I do like the Garrison/G&B figures, really nice figures that have generally stood the " test of time ".

Unfortunately their prices have not stayed as they were. You will have to pay current sort of prices for them now. Plus they are only produced to order, twice a year ( Feb and Sept, I think ). Check on the Amazon Miniatures site.

It is good to see them still being produced, but personally I would'nt buy them for the same price as younger figures. I understand that it's probably a commercially viable price, but no thanks, I'll get something else for that price whatever time of year I want it!

Sorry Paul and Amazon, just a personal opinion.

I have the SKT Khemers and they are very good. The elephants, especially command, excellent. The Maiden Guard full breasted and ready to go. The Dragon Armor horses superb. Finally, the scroll sculpt on the chariots excellent.

The QT Chin are a bit static. Although, the chariot at rest and at the gallop is one of the best.

Just a note to say that our Amazons aren't huge. But probably are 26mm foot to eye.

@Tarleton

I agree, and the reason we cast them only twice a year is to try and get some economies of scale.

In actual fact the moulds were put together by a dyslxic schizophrenic with only 1, 2 or 3 figures the same in each mould ... and then labelled and indexed incorrectly. They are a nightmare to cast and cost us more to produce then our newer well-made moulds of our own miniatures but we do it as we don't want to see the ranges die. Remaking the moulds is not an option.

In fact we are mainly supplying people who are still finishing off their armies started 20+ years ago! Still painting after all these years

Naismith 25s, Aztecs and Hellenistics are still some of the very best figs around, excellent horses, too.

Ah Greenwood & Ball/Garrison - I still have some of their old Hyberborean figures. I use the Hyrkranian Horse archers as Hun mercenaries (I just wished that I had bought more of them, I think they cost me about 25 pence a mtd figure 25 years ago). True 25mm figures anyway

It's a shame to see old ranges die out.I had Late Romans, Greeks and Aztecs from these ranges. The Greeks included figures with shield skirts - a wonder at the time.

I'm delighted that Amazon are keeping them going. Good on Ya's Amazon.
