5th Assault Regiment RE had 1233 on a cobalt-blue rectangle. They were one of the first to be equipped with Buffalo and were the main regiment involved in the Walcheren assault (Op Infatuate). The other Buffalo regiments mostly belonged to 33rd Armoured Brigade: 1st Northants Yeomanry – 152 on red square with white stripe below East Riding Yeomanry – 153 on red square with white stripe below 4th RTR (formerly 144th RAC but re-badged) – 154 on red square with white stripe below There was also 11 RTR, which was detached from 1st Army Tank Brigade. They had 122 on a green square. 42 RTR also eventually re-equipped from CDL to Buffalo, having 123 on a green square. As for the three-tone camo; Bovington's Buffalo IV is painted in that scheme, but I'm not sure what the source is. It's olive drab base, with wide alternating bands of black and a chocolate-brown shade. |

I tell a lie, 33rd Armoured Brigade seems to have switched to the new standard armoured brigade scheme (51, 52, 53 & 54 on a red square) by 1945. 11 RTR was probably still using the older AoS marking at Walcheren though. There was one Buffalo regiment using the '54' serial in 1945, which means four regiments in the brigade (11 RTR seems to have been assigned to 33rd Armoured Brigade by 1945, so they probably got the 54 serial, as they would be the junior regiment). 22nd Dragoons were also converted from Crabs to Buffalos for the Rhine Crossing, but stayed within 30th Armoured Brigade. |
