Can any of my fellow TMPers confirm that FAST EAGLE 102 and 107 were in light gull grey overall during the Gulf of Sidra. (x6440). I have a pair in my spares box that have come to the top of the painting pile.

A quick Google search reveals a moderately clear image at this site: link

It appears that 102 at least may well have been one solid color.

Thanks OG@W, pretty happy in the pictures I have found including those on wings palette and ACIG that it is indeed a solid block of colour. WLTK what that colour is :)

And here I was thinking you were referring to F-15s with the conformal fuel and sensor package!

I read the story at the link; I always enjoy the rhetoric of Bleeped textty third world countries "chased away six American bombers" and "they were going to attack many Libyan cities!"

Absolute comedy gold.

It's too bad that the US went to low-vis schemes in the '80's. Practical, yes, but not as cool looking as in the old days when USN planes are colorful and bright with their unit insignias displayed prominently, like the VF-84 Jolly Rogers or VF-1 Wolfpack Tomcats. They inspired the schemes of Roy Fokker's VF-1S and Rick Hunter's VF-1J Veritech Fighters in the popular '80s anime 'Robotech.'

There were many squadrons I saw that kept a CO's bird painted in the high vis colors while the rest were redone in low vis paint jobs.

With a phoenix missile on board you could paint a Tomcat bright orange if you wanted to.
Youtube the dogfight between the F-14 and SU-22 pretty cool.
Like watching Mike Tyson fight Justin Bieber.
